Today, populations of bees, pollinators, and many other insects are in steep decline. This day offers us all an opportunity to support measures aimed at protecting and promoting pollinators and their habitats, increasing their population density and biodiversity, and fostering the sustainable development of beekeeping. Do you know of a place where people are working to help preserve bees? Twice a week, people who were previously homeless work in the canteen of the Ministry of Labor in Düsseldorf. They are part of the "Housing First" social project and thus gain insights into the working world. The canteen operates on a donation basis – everyone decides how much they contribute. The training in the commercial kitchen helps these individuals prepare for re-entry into permanent employment. Peatlands store more CO2 than forests, yet they were drained for decades. Now Brussels has given the green light: Germany is allowed to subsidize peatland owners with up to 1.3 billion euros to rewette the areas. The Mercator Foundation has established Finance for Transition – Center for Resilient Economy and Finance, a Berlin-based think tank dedicated to demonstrating how to effectively mobilize more private capital for the modernization and decarbonization of the economy. Geopolitical conflicts, extreme weather, and technological disruptions are putting pressure on the economy. This necessitates a profound modernization of companies – which often fails due to a lack of investment incentives and insufficient integration of politics, business, and financial markets. F4T will pool and apply existing knowledge on transformation financing to advance the decarbonization of the economy. Currently, many municipal utilities face a problem: local savings banks or cooperative banks often cannot provide loans of the required size, while for large institutional investors, the business is too fragmented. One approach could be to pool projects with several municipal utilities – but this presents regulatory and organizational challenges that F4T will help to address. #goodnews by @start.pointing
Plogging is a fitness activity that combines jogging with picking up litter. It has grown into a global environmental movement with approximately 2 million participants in over 100 countries. Originating in Sweden in 2016, this initiative now includes an annual Plogging World Championship in Italy, where participants run and collect litter. The sport enhances traditional jogging by adding bending and squatting while picking up trash, providing a more comprehensive workout for cleaning up public spaces. Those inspired to join can easily find local groups on social media platforms like Facebook or start their own community initiatives. Beginners only need comfortable running clothes, appropriate footwear, gloves, and bags to participate. Schools are increasingly incorporating plogging into physical education and environmental science curricula to help students understand pollution issues while encouraging physical activity. Have you heard of this initiative? #plogging #plogging_global #collage #nachhaltigkeit #joggen #goodnews #betternews by @start.pointing
Norway aims to completely phase out fast-growing "turbo chickens" by 2027 and switch to more animal-friendly breeds. This is a historic step that could reduce the suffering of millions of chickens. The country will thus become a global leader in animal welfare. And animal welfare is human welfare. What are your thoughts on this?
