Over the last few months, young people at The Hut Youth Project have been getting creative and working alongside talented artist Frederick Worrell - Artist and Designer to design and paint some amazing new murals! 🖌️

The project was all about bringing colour, creativity and a sense of pride to the building and outdoor space. Young people took inspiration from local landmarks, nature and the world around them to create their own unique designs. 🎨

From the initial ideas and designs through to getting the paint on the walls, it’s been fantastic to see young people getting involved, expressing themselves and helping to transform the space.

We think the finished murals have brought so much colour and joy to The Hut and created a space that feels even more welcoming and inspiring for everyone who uses it. 💛

A huge well done to all the young people who took part, and a big thank you to Freddy for helping bring their ideas to life! 👏🎨

What do you think of the finished murals? Let us know in the comments! 👇 by @stc_youthservice

The concept designs for Stage Two at The Hut grew directly from conversations with the young people and staff who use the space.

During our first session on 23 September, we talked about what they would like to see across the outside window panels and two front doors, and which local places, objects and stories they felt connected to.

The ideas ranged from Anglo-Saxon artefacts held at Jarrow Hall to familiar landmarks including Penshaw Monument, Herd Groyne Lighthouse and Wearmouth Bridge. One young person spoke about riding horses near Penshaw Monument, while another developed a digital idea featuring the Angel of the North.

I brought these different contributions together using bold silhouettes, geometric blocks and a shared colour palette, creating a connected set of designs across the windows and doors. The finished concepts reflect the young people’s ideas, the input of staff and their shared connection to the surrounding area.

The next stage is turning the designs into stencils and bringing them to life on the building.

IMAGINE YOUR TEEN BEING IN THIS REEL THOUGH?

Seriously… what a summer it’s been for our KW teens! 🥹🖤

We’ve had:
🔥 Bootcamp in the park + picnic
🏄‍♀️ Surfing + food — girls & boys sessions
☀️ Summer Sesh on the beach + food
🌊 Paddleboarding
💪 Girls-only & boys-only Summer Fitness Camps
🍎 Food included throughout our camps
🤝 And loads of opportunities alongside South Tyneside Youth Services! @stc_youthservice

And now summer might be ending… but THIS DOESN’T.

Term-time means we’re straight back into our regular teen sessions, focusing on:

💪 Strength
🔥 Fitness & endurance
🤝 Teamwork
🧠 Confidence
❤️ Friendships
🙌 Learning to actually ENJOY moving their bodies!

Because being part of KW Fitness means your teenager becomes part of a family and a community.

They’ve got somewhere to go.
People who know their name.
Coaches who want to see them do well.
A group to belong to.
And opportunities to try things they might NEVER normally try.

Then when the school holidays come back around… so do our Fit Camps, activities and socials! 🙌

Climbing walls 🧗
BBQs 🍔
Beach fitness 🌊
Surfing 🏄
Paddleboarding
Trips, camps, challenges… and plenty more still to come.

Why WOULDN’T you want your teenager to be part of this?!
Just saying. 🤷‍♀️

Get them involved now because the friendships, confidence, strength and memories they’re building here go WAY beyond the gym. 💪

I’ve been working on a new mural for The Hut, a community youth space in Newcastle, and it’s really starting to come together. 🎨

The design takes a lot from the nature and landscape around the area, mixed with bold geometric patterns and colour. There’s a sense of movement running through the different pieces, with the shapes and patterns helping connect one part of the space to another.

I’ve also been working alongside some of the young people from The Hut, getting them involved in bringing parts of the mural to life. I really enjoy this side of community projects — having the people who actually use the space involved in creating something they can feel proud of.

Great working with Gayle Marr and the team at The Hut, alongside South Tyneside Council.
Still a little more to do, but really happy with how it’s coming together! 🙌
