Right time, right place?

The worst conditions possible. But what if they lead you to one of the prettiest fish in the world, in probably one of the most gorgeous valleys in the world?

I’ve been thinking about these fish for so long. I’ve caught many of them on the fly, with minnows… but I always seemed to miss the biggest ones.

Today, I caught 8 monsters, all of them over 60 cm.

Why? Because of the pre-spawn? Because I fished in the exact opposite way to every other angler in these kinds of spots?

Probably just luck.

I love fishing, no matter if it’s a dry fly or a sinking minnow. by @stereolaks

Floating flies and sinking minnows.

Broken heart or not, Pete is right. With this one exception that there's no moonlight up here. by @stereolaks

What is hiding outside?

Time passes, and the meaning I give to fishing becomes clearer.

The rejection of fishing as an object of consumption. The thoughts I give to the eyes of other anglers. Who am I fishing for? Is it a way of shining through an Instagram-worthy fish held at arm’s length? Probably not. Have I ever waited for the reactions of others, to the point of fishing more for them than for myself? Probably.

For a long time, I wondered whether fly fishing was the only way to reach that halieutic state of flow. That almost perfect connection with nature. The most aesthetic form of fishing, the easiest to capture in a film, the easiest to explain to the next person who asks: “Oh, you fish? But why?”

No, fly fishing is not the answer. No, it is not worth more than any other form of fishing. It escapes neither the realities of overconsuming natural resources nor the tendency to turn fishing into a symbol of success and achievement.

All these contradictions are part of a longer reflection on the meaning that I (that we) give to the act of trying to fool a fish with a decorated hook. by @stereolaks
