MEET OUR GUEST CHOREOGRAPHERS: STEWART/OWEN DANCE

We’re so excited to welcome Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen of Stewart/Owen Dance to State Dance Company! As a husband-and-wife duo and co-founders of their Western North Carolina-based company, Gavin and Vanessa have created contemporary works across the entire nation.

Their impressive choreographic credits include collaborations with Moses Sumney and Sylvan Esso, residencies and commissions with the American Dance Festival, a commission from the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, and an Audience Choice Award at the NYC Dance Gallery Festival.

Beyond the stage, Gavin and Vanessa are passionate educators, leading community classes and workshops and directing dance intensives for emerging artists. We can’t wait to learn, create, and move with them in the spring! Welcome to NC State, Gavin & Vanessa!

Stay tuned for more from our time together!

Join Gavin Stewart + Vanessa Owen for Contemporary Partnerships, a two-day workshop exploring the physical conversation between dancers.

Through warm-ups, partnered improvisation, and excerpts of partnered choreography, you’ll work with trust, weight-sharing, balance, momentum, and physical “listening.”

This workshop’s approach to partnering moves away from traditional partnering roles, giving you opportunities to both give and receive weight, support and be supported, and discover how different bodies, strengths, and instincts can work together.

Open-Level | 2+ years of contemporary dance experience
October 17 & 18 | 9 am - 1 pm

Asheville-area folks, mark your calendars!
Please join me, Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen (co-directors of Stewart/Owen Dance, a Western NC artistic treasure), for this open and wide-ranging conversation circling around the concept of the dancer’s mindset— how we as dancers see the world through the prism of our training and how anyone else can, too.
Using examples from my two books, BEING A BALLERINA: THE POWER AND PERFECTION OF A DANCING LIFE, and INFINITE STEPS: THIRTY-THREE DANCERS AND THEIR LIVES IN BALLET, we’ll dig into the many ways dance shapes a person’s sense of identity, purpose, and spiritual fortitude, and why dance itself takes on an almost human dimension within us.

Huge thanks to @malapropsbookstore and @storyparloravl for hosting us!
This will take place on Sunday, Sept 13 from 3-5pm at Story Parlor.
227 Haywood Road
FREE!! But an RSVP is appreciated. You can do that via @malapropsbookstore or just show up.
