Our studio ❤️

This year has seen a few evolutions of the space at @stoneware.studios. Firstly was the move of the main studio into this space just after the summer - it’s got a loft feel with a high ceiling and airy atmosphere. (We love that to get to the front floor you walk up the stairs surrounded by vines. Jack climbing up the beanstalk.)

We’ve reconfigured this room recently to give more space for teachers to provide support and free up space for the work bench along the right wall. This is where fettling, handles, slip and glaze work is done.

This new set up provides a perfect space for our members and students alike to tuck themselves behind a wheel and get in their flow. Creating peaceful spaces has always been so important to the feel of our studio. Knowing that a clay practice can provide so much - one of these things a tonic for an overactive brain.

These pictures were taken on Friday when it was stormy outside and Mercedes (one of our fantastic Work Exchanges ❤️) was making in a quiet studio. Couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures to show you what the studio’s looking like now.

If you’re thinking of joining as a member and would like to come see the space first, you’re more than welcome to pop by so we can show you around. Just drop us an email before so we can make sure someone’s here to meet you. We’d love to show you.

We love reviews like this and are so grateful for the wonderful students we have coming through our doors. Curious, open and eager to learn. Meeting you all is the best bit of the job. by @stoneware.studios

What does a clay practice give you?

I’ve been reflecting on this recently and there’s a lot I could talk about… The tactile feeling of soft wet clay being an antidote to a life spent on a screen. The grounding sense of connection you get from doing something ancient (humans have been throwing pots on a wheel for thousands of years, their hands going through the same motions). That you alone have immediate agency over this lump of clay in front of you to influence its shape (something I found a tonic to a corporate work life where success of a project often felt totally out of my control).

But one of the key reasons I found, and still find, a clay practice grounding is that you must work with the seasons. With most modern human endeavours, it is possible to operate the same whether you’re working in the height of summer or the depths of winter. But as studio potters we must take into the account the atmosphere (moisture + temperature) and be responsive to adapting how clay is drying. Seasons change gradually not overnight, and so must how we manage clay.

🌟 Join our studio as a member; from £140pm or book a course with us to start your clay practice. Membership spots filling up and we have just a couple of courses left before the end of the year!

The new studio build! Camera role archive from transforming a carpeted office into our new teaching space.

I launched @stoneware.studios almost 2 years ago in a smaller unit in the same building with 4 pottery wheels. We got our first students, lots of them came back, I employed a couple more fantastic teachers, and everything started to grow (which makes it all sound simple but trust me it’s been a ride!). Earlier this year I realised we’d outgrown the space downstairs and when this larger unit came up for rent in the same building I jumped at it.

We had to turn the space around very quickly so I didn’t get a chance to share much about it on here at the time. So here’s a few archival bits from the project. There were lots of hands on deck to help out - thank you everyone!❤️

We now run our small schedule of weekly taught courses up here. It’s a wonderful place to learn to make pots as it’s spacious with room to spread out and a wonderfully airy feel. Natural light in the day and cosy in the evenings. (I’m only sad I won’t be around to make pots in here myself while I’ll be off on Mat Leave!!)

When courses aren’t running this studio will be open for studio members! We are welcoming our first cohort in a couple of weeks time we can’t wait 🌟

If you’re looking for a pottery home for your practice, and to join a small community of clay enthusiasts in our corner of SW London, we’d love to have you. Take a look at our website for all the details of our Full Membership scheme.

Thank you to everyone who continues to make @stonewarestudios everything I dreamed it would be! Excited for this new chapter to deepen the clay community we’re building.

Ps - a smaller membership scheme will be launching next week too for anyone who wants a program where they can come and work independently without too much commitment! 👀 Stay tuned, spaced limited by @stoneware.studios

If you’re looking for somewhere to develop your ceramics practice, our new Studio Membership might be for you.

Built for potters who want a supported studio to work independently on their craft. Having taught courses for almost 2 years now since we launched, we know that the natural next step for intermediate potters is space to practice and explore. What we have created is a small membership scheme for a limited number of potters to use the studio, make pots and become part of our members community. It’s perfect for anyone who’s completed a Developer level course and craves time at the wheel to practice.

Especially now the days are drawing in.. tucking into a cosy pottery studio on a week day; evening or weekend to throw some pots is our idea of heaven. Big cup of tea and a podcast. (But we are biased!)

All the details are on our website 🔗

But to give a little more info on here -

You’ll have access to our studio for up to 18hrs a week, use of all our equipment and tools, clay and glaze included. Kilns are managed by our technician team, as is the reclaim process so it’s a supported studio environment and you can focus on the creative elements. by @stoneware.studios

Who likes our newest studio glaze?

Available to all students and members, along with a pallet of 13 other house glazes.
