The new edition of ‘Jack and Jill’ is my first ever book with a *dust wrapper*.

@stoplookandlisten.studio have designed the complete publication, it is stunning and their Victorian-map-made-psychedelic jacket fulfils many phantasies of mine.

Jack and Jill is one of our favourite pieces of writing by Thomas Sharp. It’s a folk-horror teen-romance poem adding to the burgeoning canon of England’s hill-myths. So we were delighted to be asked to collaborate on a special new limited edition, illustrated by @millieturner, whose fantastic drawings have captured both the sadness and psychedelia of the story so perfectly. The book has a wonderful rhythm that inspired us to get our hands dirty and have some inky typographic fun with Thomas's words. This first printing of this edition is very limited and available to preorder now (at an early bird price) at the link in our bio. There will also be a launch event featuring a musical performance by @skershawno1 on November 25th which you can sign up for via @thomassharp’s bio. by @stoplookandlisten.studio

We Go Way Back at @thefranciscrickinstitute

The title treatment from the exhibition visual identity, combining ‘past, present and future’ characters in code-like sequences, was extended to the introduction panels throughout the space.

We designed a bespoke ceiling installation of suspended ‘family trees’, each printed with different paths of inheritance that can contribute to our DNA makeup. The randomness of this inheritance is visualised on a wall infographic showing how some of our DNA has been passed down for generations while other sections of our ancestry can end up completely absent.

With ‘connectedness’ one of the key themes of the exhibition, we used a broad and bright palette taken from the poster image to differentiate the displays and then introduced a single accent colour that runs through everything – including the ceiling installation and anamorphic title – symbolising the common thread of DNA that connects us all as humans across geography and time. by @stoplookandlisten.studio

In addition to creating the visual identity (with Thomas Sharp), Stop, Look and Listen were asked to join the team designing the UK’s first exhibition about Ancient DNA, open now until July 2027.

The highly interactive exhibition carries the bold palette and code-like typography of the identity, and spotlights the input of the many researchers, archaeologists and historians putting together the puzzle that is our shared history. Various displays allow you to discover the history of diseases, challenge assumptions about historic burials with newly discovered information, and get closer to the teams applying knowledge from ancient bones to modern-day medical challenges.

As well as the graphic treatment for the exhibition, we created a bespoke ceiling installation, infographic displays and a 3D, anamorphic title that draws visitors into the high-ceilinged Manby Gallery. by @stoplookandlisten.studio

The ability to extract useful DNA information from skeletons thousands of years old has a profoundly illuminating impact on our understanding of migration, disease and ancestry, and the threads through history that connect modern humans across the globe. Alongside archaeology, historical records and other sciences, the stories of real people that ancient bones can tell us are richer and more surprising than ever thanks to groundbreaking new techniques taking place at the Francis Crick Institute.

We worked with @thomassharp who named the exhibition, to produce a visual identity for We Go Way Back, the first exhibition on Ancient DNA in the UK now open at the @thefranciscrickinstitute. It is a bold illustration of our interconnectedness as humans; figures overlapping and blending into each other, losing the point at which one ends and another begins. Despite the process of ancient DNA beginning in the ground, it is a cutting edge science propelling our understanding of humanity forwards, so the use of colour situates the exhibition far from the worlds of archaeology and history.

A combination of typefaces suggesting the past, present and future come together in code-like sequences for the exhibition title, an idea repeated across wayfinding and into the exhibition itself.

Now to be found across the London Underground network as well as on the outside of the amazing Institute building itself, the figures tower over visitors as a reminder of the great many people who have contributed to who each and every one of us is today.

Today is the opening of We Go Way Back at the @thefranciscrickinstitute, the UK’s first exhibition about cutting edge techniques developed to analyse Ancient DNA, and the stories DNA can reveal about how connected we truly are. Stop, Look and Listen worked with @thomassharp on the exhibition naming, identity and marketing.
🧬
The exhibition will run until July 2027, and last night’s launch event featured, amongst others, talks from Pontus Skoglund, the head of the Ancient DNA Lab at the Crick, Katrina Nilsson, the exhibition’s curator and the fantastic Dame Mary Beard, who was part of the exhibition’s steering group.

Installation and event identity for poet and artist @thomassharp’s latest live experience at the Bank of England ‘So beautiful and strange and new’

If you know Thomas’s work or have attended any of his events, you know to expect the unexpected. As well as an exhibition, the evening featured a talk, a musical performance by @sorori.collective, a guided meditation, and a private poetry reading in the heart of the bank, which hosted 50 practising witches and wizards, who proceeded to cast a magical spell asking money to propagate towards artists and peacemakers.

In the build up to the event, many attendees had embraced the weathervane as a symbol of changing the direction of money itself, and they came prepared with their own versions as badges and amulets.

The event exhibition took the form of a circle of easels, each correctly aligned to points of the compass underneath the bank’s rotunda. The cardinal points of the compass were applied as floor vinyl, turning the installation into a representation of the bank’s historic wind dial.

Stepping inside, visitors could align themselves either with museum artefacts representing Kenneth Grahame’s era at the bank, or original artworks created in response by invited artists, all mounted using banknote clips. Graphics were applied in holographic foil inspired by security foils on notes, creating colour that shifted as visitors interacted with the space.

Is the wind bringing ships in … or rustling the willows?

Installation and event identity for poet and artist @thomassharp’s latest live experience at the Bank of England ‘So beautiful and strange and new’

Thomas Sharp curated and hosted an event for the Bank of England’s 2026 Museum Lates series, telling the story of Kenneth Grahame, who worked at the Bank of England for thirty years. He didn’t like the job, and spent much of the time writing his book The Wind in the Willows in bank ledgers. The book includes possibly some of the most mystical writing in all of children’s literature – chapter seven, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, where Mole and Rat encounter the great god Pan.

Our event identity centred on a weathervane graphic, inspired by one that had been on top of the bank for 200 years. In Kenneth Grahame’s time it connected to a wind dial showing compass points inside the Bank’s Court Room. Bankers could predict by the direction of the wind when trading ships were coming in to the city – and with them, their chance to make some money.

The changing direction of a weathervane becomes a symbol of contrast – in one direction, Grahame’s job at the heart of Edwardian capitalism. In the other, his creation of a world where talking animals encounter pagan visions in Arcadia. Its holographic appearance references the shiny allure of banknotes – or the sunrise reflecting on the river…

Design for the recently released book City Centre Survival by photographer Janey Devine.

The book features a collection of commissioned essays by historians, academics and councillors illuminating the past heydays of the cities featured in the book, as well as looking to the future, and how cities can work best for their citizens.

The section is dense with maps, historical imagery and advertisements from the cities featured, and punctuated with the names of various products and industries that brought the cities their fortunes, from Brogues (Northampton) to Biscuits (Reading). The section is printed on Coloraction Pastel Yellow which, along with a density of information, recalls a Yellow Pages directory. The type used throughout is GT Pressura, a face inspired by the engineered lettering found stamped onto goods boxes.

Design for the recently released book City Centre Survival by photographer Janey Devine.

Janey’s project started in her local city centre of Southampton where she found herself shocked by the rapid pace of change taking place. She began photographing areas of the city centre and taking portraits of people she met. Conversations revealed mixed feelings about the place they called home.

Expanding the project to twelve British cities, each once an essential part of the country’s industrial development, her photography explores how history, changing fortunes and planning decisions affect the lives and outlook of people in towns and cities today.

The photographic section of the book features a selection of portraits and places from the project, sequenced with minimal information (beyond names and locations) to highlight her subjects as well as visual coincidences and echoes from city to city.
