A couple of books I spent some time with this past weekendā€¦ Whistler by Ann Patchett is an absolute gem that would have kept me reading through the night if I hadnā€™t made myself stop. I was fully immersed in the world Ann has created and Iā€™m dying to get back to it. Weā€™ll see what happens tonight! I have dog-eared so many pages in Oversharing by @cheesegal Cortney LaCorte that I have no idea which recipe I will make first. Easy appetizers and snacks, something-for-everybody entrees, and yummy desserts are presented in a fun, ā€œyou can do itā€ manner. Great fiction, great cookbook, great weekend. Happy Monday! #greatfiction #greatcookbook #happyreading #annpatchett #cortneylacorte #cheesegal by @storyeditsbysusan

I was fortunate to read @authorbeatriz When You Loved Me via @netgalley and @ballantinebooks in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are below - no spoilers! When You Loved Me is another winner from Beatriz Williams. We are back on Winthrop Island for this novel and as usual, I wanted to jump into the pages of this book like they do in the original Mary Poppins. I was thrilled to be back in the world of Sedge, Monk and Mallory, who are three of my favorite characters ever. Williams is master at multiple POVā€™s and she continues with When You Loved Me. The story follows three timelines with the common threads being pirate treasure and star-crossed lovers. The Lucy story unfolds in two timelines and The Hephzibah story covers one timeline. Williams very creatively links the stories of these two women and while I initially had a hard time getting into the Hephzibah story, by the end of the book I was all in and cheering for Hephzibah and Ramsey. Once again, @authorbeatriz has created a charming, handsome, male character who you wish existed in real life in Ben Ressler. Even though he comes with his own set of problematic circumstances, you canā€™t help but love him. There were so many characters to love in this book, Ben, Lucy, Punkin, Old Mrs. Peabody. I found the Lucy/Laura/Ben plot line a little bit of a stretch, but decided to just go along with it rather than listen to the cynical side of my brain that questioned if that kind of relationship/friendship could really exist. There was one small plot twist that made me scream out loud, and one that I thought I had figured out, but noooo, it ended up being better than what I imagined. While I was reading, I couldnā€™t help but think what a great @netflixfilm movie or series this novel would make. I highly recommend When You Loved Me to anyone looking for a summer escape. This would be a great vacation or staycation read because it is easy to while away the hours in the world Beatriz has created. But, be warned, if you arenā€™t on vacation you could find yourself leaving your ā€œto doā€ list on a long pause like I did. by @storyeditsbysusan
Iā€™ve been told that my logo doesnā€™t ā€œreadā€ editor because it is a flower. Most editorsā€™ logos feature a book, a pen, or a piece of paper with words from a story. My logo is a flower because I believe that stories are a lot like flowers. A story starts as a thought in your head (the seed), over time that thought evolves into the layers of a story (the seed is watered and after a few weeks it pops out of the ground and starts forming petals) and eventually the whole thing bursts forth into a beautiful story (the flower). The flower in my logo represents the petals that make up a story. A good story needs an interesting plot, an engaging point-of-view, compelling characters, a setting that draws the reader in, a conflict that needs to be resolved or goal that needs to be achieved. The proper pacing, realistic dialogue and a resolution that makes sense are also important. Those are the story elements that I help writers and authors tend to when I am doing a beta read or a developmental edit. I offer straightforward feedback and suggestions on how to fix problem ā€œpetalsā€ in your story. If you are having a hard time figuring out where to go with your story, go outside and find a flower in the park, on the side of the road, or in your own garden. Look at all of the petals and think about the layers of your story. Think of all the days and the nourishment that was needed for that flower to form from a simple seed. Stories take time, care and tending to, just like flowers. Donā€™t give up. A beautiful story is about to bloom. I work with fiction writers and authors of all levels. Peonies and books. Happy Sunday! šŸ“ššŸ’ā˜€ļø by @storyeditsbysusan
ā€œBurnt Fields Under Snowā€ by R. G. Pagano is a wonderful book of poems that reads like a story. The book follows the author and his wife as they spend a year in Italy. She paints, he writes poems and stories. The bookā€™s cover is a painting by the authorā€™s wife. The first section of the book fittingly depicts their arrival in Italy and the first few months of their stay. The second section shows the reader what it was like to be an American outside of the United States during 9/11. You can feel the emotion and a sense of utter disbelief as they watch the tragedy unfold on a TV in a cafĆ© in the town of Bassano del Grappa. The third section takes us to the Brenta River, the Adriatic Sea and finally over the Swiss Alps on their flight back to the US as their year abroad comes to an end. Richā€™s writing style is quite beautiful. His description of their time in Italy, and the simplicity of it, is such a nice break from our days that are filled with constant news, social media, emails, texts, phone calls. This short book of poems was a welcome escape and is a great reminder to stop and recognize the beauty around us every single day. @r7pagano @karenkelsaydavies @amazon @barnesandnoble #poetry #poetrycommunity #instapoetry by @storyeditsbysusan
Sunny and 65 degrees. Windows open. Snow still on the ground. Nutty! But Iā€™ll take it! šŸ¤£ā˜€ļø by @storyeditsbysusan
A couple of weeks ago, a friend gave me Theo of Golden by @allenlevi This book is a GIFT, which is kind of ironic because a central theme of the story is the bestowal of certain gifts. Theo of Golden is heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. It is one of those books that you take your time reading because it is so beautifully written. You want to know what will happen next, yet you also want to savor every scene, every character, every chapter. I finished Theo of Golden last night. The story and its message will stay with me for a while. The book was self-published, which was shocking to me. I couldnā€™t believe a publishing house hadnā€™t picked up this gem. But, I just learned that @allenlevi has recently signed with Suzanne Gluck @wmebooks and they have a deal with @atriabooks @simonandschuster Now a wider audience will be treated to Theoā€™s journey and the people he meets along the way. This is the kind of story that our world needs right now. I suggest you read it. by @storyeditsbysusan
