Taking a canal cruise in Copenhagen is an absolute must-do, and the city looks incredible from the water. On one side you sail past classic, colorful townhouses in Nyhavn, and just a bit further out, modern landmarks pop up – like the Opera House or CopenHill, an eco-friendly power plant with a ski slope on its roof.

I specifically aimed for the late afternoon. I boarded the boat right at 4:00 PM and spent a full hour soaking in the views. At this time of day, the sun sits lower, casting a brilliant, soft light and creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The footage is 100% natural – just what was there on the spot, completely raw and unedited. The absolute icing on the cake was a rainbow appearing right over the canal.

The best part about Copenhagen is how easy it is to combine both worlds. First, a long, relaxing walk along the waterfront and through the streets, followed by taking in the full picture from the deck. Only that combination gives you the complete vibe of the city.

A few practical tips if you are planning a cruise:

Instead of typical tour boats, you can opt for the water bus (Havnebus) – it runs along the canals and uses regular public transport tickets.

Want more privacy? Rent a small electric boat (like GoBoat) and host your own floating picnic.

Late afternoon hours are the golden hour for photos – the natural light on the water works pure magic.

Do you also like mixing walking tours with boat perspectives, or do you prefer sticking to just one way of exploring?

@stromma_danmark Perfect weather, a boat, and a new city. Doing a boat tour wherever we travel has become our tradition, and our guided Copenhagen canal tour with Stromma was by far one of our favorites.

One of the best ways to discover the city is from the water. You see the architecture from a completely different angle, pass famous monuments and buildings, and learn the history along the way, especially with a guide like ours, who was quirky, hilarious, and super knowledgeable.

Then there are the canal tunnels. They can feel a little trippy when you realize how low they are and how close the boat gets to the sides while squeezing through, but it’s so much fun.

We started in Nyhavn, one of the liveliest and most colorful neighborhoods we’ve ever seen. The waterfront dates back to the 1600s, and the bright townhouses along the canal are even better in person.

Nyhavn is a must visit even if you skip the tour, but if you’re in Copenhagen, please do the canal tour if you can. The next time we’re back in Copenhagen, we will 100% do it again! by @stromma_danmark
