Exciting news! I’m thrilled to share that our 1930s Hyde Park bungalow is featured on @homesandgardensofficial! This project is so special—not just because it’s where I live, but also because it’s where I pushed myself and made some bold choices and started to find my personal design point of view.

Huge thanks to Homes & Gardens and @mollymalsom for showcasing this home tour and bringing its story to the world. I looked to British interiors and designers as inspiration for this project, and it’s a true honor to have it featured by the UK’s first shelter publication.

Founded by Ali Burgoon Nolan, Studio Burgoon is a full-service interior design firm creating residential interiors rooted in craft, architectural heritage, and intentional design. We approach each project holistically, allowing a home’s history and original character to guide our decisions.

Our work blends old and new, layering patinated vintage pieces with handcrafted modern elements to create interiors that feel collected, soulful, and personal. With a hospitality design trained eye and a trusted network of artisans and craftspeople, we manage the entire design process from concept through installation—offering a hands-off, turn-key experience for clients with discerning taste who value clarity, craftsmanship and thoughtful decision-making.

Above all, we believe it’s an honor to help shape spaces that evoke curiosity, support modern life, and endure with grace over time.

There’s something really special about seeing this project continue to resonate.

I honestly wasn’t expecting such a warm response to last week’s post sharing that we were honored with Rising Star and Best Use of Vintage at the Austin Home & Design Awards. I’m so grateful for every message, comment, and new face that’s found its way here. It truly means a lot!

So I wanted to share a closer look at the project behind it.

Our Hyde Park home began as a 1939 bungalow with good bones, but not a lot of charm. What started as a personal renovation for my husband and me back in 2020 quickly grew into something much bigger. It became a full gut, an addition, and eventually the project that gave me the confidence to start my firm.

At the time, I was still working in hospitality design with just one residential project under my belt. This home became the bridge where I started to define what now feels so core to my work. Layered, collected interiors. A reverence for what came before. A commitment to creating something that feels intentional and personal to how we live.

Nearly every decision was guided by that lens, honoring the age of the home while evolving it for modern life. I was continually drawn to the Arts and Crafts movement, with subtle nods throughout, from William Morris patterns to details inspired by my uncle’s English Tudor cottage in Michigan where I spent summers, all grounded in the home’s original architectural language.

Looking back, it really does feel like the beginning of everything.

And to those of you who are new here, welcome. We have some exciting projects wrapping up and a few new ones just getting underway. I’m looking forward to sharing more of what we’re working on as it all unfolds!

I always leave Round Top feeling inspired, and this year was no exception. We incorporate vintage pieces into almost every room we design, and finding the right ones means field trips spent searching high and low.

But the work doesn’t stop at sourcing—or snapping a few pretty photos. Getting these pieces project-ready means coordinating shipping, refinishing or reupholstering when needed, and working with local makers to get every detail right before delivery and installation.

There’s a lot that happens between finding a piece we love and seeing it in its new home. I can’t wait to see some of these special finds make their way into our upcoming projects! by @studioburgoon

Some of the least glamorous decisions when designing a bathroom are the ones that matter most.

Is there a natural place for a robe hook? Can you reach the towel bar from the shower without dripping across the room? Is the toilet paper actually within comfortable reach, or are you twisting halfway around the vanity and throwing out your back just to get to it? Does the door swing into something it shouldn’t? Is there actually enough wall space for everything once the vanity, mirrors, sconces, outlets, and trim are accounted for?

These are the kinds of questions we’re thinking about very early in the design process, often before a single tile or plumbing finish has been selected. And sometimes, there isn’t an obvious place for something as basic as a towel bar, which means we need to adjust the layout, millwork, or architecture to create one.

Every bathroom shown here has different needs, proportions, and personalities, but the approach is the same: think through every square inch so the finished space feels intuitive, considered, and beautiful to live in.

A great bathroom design is about a lot more than specifying pretty tile and counters.

The most sustainable choice is often about choosing better.

To me, sustainability is as much about longevity and restraint as it is about materials: keeping what has value, buying fewer things of better quality, and being thoughtful about where something comes from, how it’s made, and who makes it.

That intention guides a lot of my decisions:

• Keep what’s worth keeping. Original architectural details, well-made vintage furniture, and antiques bring character that’s difficult to recreate. Before adding something new, I look at what already exists and what deserves another chapter.

• Buy fewer things, with more consideration. Construction, materials, proportion, and comfort all matter. I’m looking for pieces that are made well enough to last, finishes clients will appreciate as they age, and choices they’ll still love long after a trend has passed. Buying less and buying better is one of the most meaningful sustainability decisions we can make in a home.

• Work with people who know their craft. I care about where a piece is made, what it’s made from, and the hands behind it. Collaborating with local craftspeople, independent makers, and fabricators gives us a closer connection to that process and allows us to make more intentional decisions about materials, construction, and finish.

These are commitments I bring to every project. They lead to homes with character and staying power, where the investment continues to make sense long after the last piece is installed, and where sustainability comes from choosing things thoughtfully enough that they don’t need to be replaced.

I’m getting ready to head back to Round Top tomorrow, and this chair from last year’s trip has me excited for what we’ll find next.

We loved the original vintage piece, but a few changes made it exactly what our client had envisioned. We reupholstered it, re-stained the arms and legs, and added a beautiful button detail that brought it all together.

This is something we do often in our projects: find a vintage piece with character, then tailor the fabric, finish, and details to suit the client’s aesthetic and the room around it. There’s so much possibility in a piece when you know what to keep and what to rework.

The artwork you haven’t chosen yet could change your electrical plan.

That’s one reason I bring up picture lights early. I use them in nearly every project because they add light at a height that overhead fixtures can’t, drawing your eye to the art and giving the room another layer of warmth.

Here’s what I’m thinking through before we close up the walls:

• The art and its placement. The dimensions, frame, and hanging height help determine the fixture’s size and position. “Somewhere above the painting” isn’t enough information for the electrical plan.

• The actual fixture. I want the selected light’s specifications reviewed with the electrician before locating the electrical connection. Mounting requirements vary, so we plan around the fixture we’re using.

• How we’ll control it. I want a picture light to dim so it can contribute to the room’s evening lighting. We coordinate fixture and dimmer compatibility, whether it’s on its own switch or part of a lighting-control system such as Lutron.

Getting those decisions made together means we can put the electrical where it belongs the first time. It’s worth planning early to avoid reopening a finished wall, moving wiring, and patching and repainting for a detail we could have accounted for from the beginning.

There’s something about the way golden hour pours into this corner of the house that never gets old.

Early in the project, we reworked the layout to take full advantage of the western light and the view beyond the breakfast nook. That decision shaped where we located this breakfast nook, how it connected to the outdoor kitchen, and ultimately how this part of the home feels at the end of the day.

I love setting the table as the light starts to soften, having dinner, and seeing how the dappled light streaming through the chik blinds seems to make the stress of the day fade away.

These are the decisions I’m thinking about long before we’re selecting furniture or fabrics. How does the sun move through the house? What do you see from each room? Where do you want to be in the morning, and where do you want to land at the end of the day?

The most beautiful interiors start much earlier than the decorating phase. They start with the floor plan, the architecture, and understanding how you want to live in the home.

Sometimes a piece you spot on vacation stays with you for years before it finds its way into a project. This one was worth the wait.

I photographed a vintage British campaign dresser and desk at a hotel on a trip to Africa, knowing it would someday inspire custom work. It took years to find the right project and the right client for it. Between the beautiful wood, the labor, and the sheer amount of hardware required, these were always going to be significant pieces to produce. This client understood that investment and was fully on board with bringing the idea to life.

Custom furniture is a big part of my practice. I started my career in hospitality design, where so much of the furniture in hotel guest rooms is designed specifically for the project, so creating custom pieces has always felt very natural to me. I incorporate it into nearly every project because it gives us the freedom to tailor the proportions, finishes, materials, and details specifically to the home—and creates you won’t see anywhere else.

Swipe through for the full story, from the piece that started it all to the drawings, workshop, hardware installation, and final result.

Your home doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s.

When everyone shops from the same handful of retailers, the options start to feel familiar. Beyond those stores is an entirely different world of manufacturer showrooms, trade-only lines, workrooms, and markets like High Point in North Carolina and Deco Off in Paris. It’s where we source the majority of our projects, and where the possibilities for finding something specifically suited to your home expand considerably.

But access is only part of the value.

Is the cushion trillium, high-density foam, or a feather-and-down blend? Is the seat suspension 8-way hand-tied, sinuous springs, or webbing? How will the fabric perform with kids? Can the dimensions be customized without compromising the proportions?

That’s why to-the-trade resources exist. They aren’t just another place to shop. They’re part of a much larger design and manufacturing ecosystem that requires knowledge of construction, materials, customization, scale, lead times, and execution.

That experience informs what I bring to a client. Each recommendation comes with consideration for comfort, scale, materials, and all the details involved in getting the piece from a showroom into your home.

Years of designing boutique hotels taught me to pay close attention to the entrance. It’s the first impression of a space, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

That’s something I’ve carried into my residential work, including this entryway at our Sun Valley project.

Even a small vignette comes with a long list of decisions. Scale, proportion, finishes, and placement all affect how the pieces work together, right down to the space we leave between objects.

Swipe for a closer look at the choices behind this one. It’s a small part of the home, with the same care behind it as a whole room.
