Happy New Year to you all. 2024 was personally not the best of years for me but lots to look forward to in the new year. Onwards and upwards. I hope all of you have a great year ahead 💪 ! NB: photo for compliance is a MB Tropic Brown Rouge et Noir.

TOP 5 MOST PERSONAL PENS: it’s that time of the year when some introspection or review is undertaken for the year! Whilst looking at my pen collection today, I thought of these 5 that have some personal connection and which of course won’t be sold. Here goes:

Pens (L to R):

1. Visconti Southwest - as some of you may recall, I had a few pens stolen in October 2022. The Southwest was one of those pens. I managed to obtain another version of this pen from the retailer at a generous offer. The replacement reminds me of that awful time but also being grateful of what you have. Most importantly, the generosity reaffirms that it’s long term relationships in business that are much more important than short term profits.
2. Visconti Mecca: I saw this pen in 2011/2012 in the Great Writing Room, Harrods and was in awe of it. I never imagined I would own one 10 years later. The pen also represents my faith which is dear to me.
3. MB 149 - my first serious expensive FP purchase in 2012 😊.
4. Montegrappa Extra 1930 - this is a pen I worked on creating with the Montegrappa CEO in tribute of my late mother. May God Bless Her Soul. It’s one I use regularly.
5. MB 146 Diamond - I bought this from a boutique in Dubai in 2015 at a time of great change in my working life. It reminds me of that time and the importance of humility.

In a hobby where social media is constantly inviting you to buy that next different colour swirly pen or to deal with FOMO, I’ve found that a pen purchase connected to a time, event or a memory can become a ‘better’ purchase and lifetime companion.

What are your most personal pens?

I would love to see them and to know the stories behind them !

TOP 9 of 2024: I’m not really into spending too much time editing photos or dealing with lighting etc for the ‘gram. I generally take a photo on an impulse or post whatever is on the iPhone photos app. Too impatient and my talents lie elsewhere 😂. But it’s nice to end the year with some decent photos of some pens in my collection. 2024 has been a challenging year on many fronts but looking forward to 2025 and what it has to offer 💪. For the pen collecting journey, I hope to continue to reduce the collection and add long time grails and/or new releases but suspect those additions will be few 🖊️ 💚✒️.

TOP 5 OF 2024: this year has been one of consolidation and executing my longer term collection aspirations. I sold 29 pens - a significant amount of celluloids and pens that are the same albeit in a different colour/material. However, I purchased 8 of which these 5 make the list for this year.

Pens (L to R):

1. Lamy 2000 Steel: I left this acquisition late into my collection journey. It’s got the right heft and a lovely medium nib. A pen that competes well against many more expensive pens.
2. Namiki Yukari Royale Night Scene of Pavilion: this has been on my wish list for at least 2 years. The makie art is so detailed on such a small canvas.Impressive. The Yukari Royales along with the MB Solitaires are my favourite pens for daily work/meetings: nice heft, reliable and fantastic 18k nibs.
3. Lamy 2000 Pine Green: it’s in my favourite colour and the shade of green is gorgeous.
4. MB Olympics Paris 1924: the gorgeous coral colour is warm and just… lovely. The 14k 146 nibs are not my favourite ..but this pen was tuned by @atemlicht and now it’s a fantastic writer. The pen was also purchased in a way to remind of the 2012 Olympics. I was lucky to attend many of the 2012 games but only now have I got a pen to remind me of that glorious summer.
5. Montegrappa 1930 Malachite: green + gold = 💚

I’d love to see your #top5 for this year !

Enjoying these 6 especially the Namiki Yukari Royale Night Scene Pavilion and Montegrappa Malachite. Very different pens but a pleasure to write with them.
