Juliana Acosta Gil G’27 (@suartsciences) curated the new Biblio Gallery exhibit on the 4th floor of Bird Library, “Celia: A Story that Persists” 📖

Elena Fortún (Madrid, 1886–1953), the literary name of Encarnación Aragoneses, was one of the most important Spanish writers of children’s literature in the twentieth century and the creator of beloved character Celia. Her stories accompanied generations of children and gave space to a curious, imaginative voice full of questions. Celia was created by Elena Fortún during a time of great change in Spain as the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) transformed the lives of many people.

Elena Fortún went into exile in Argentina, where she continued writing Celia’s story, speaking specifically to the dark and violent realities of the civil war. As Spain entered a new period under the Franco dictatorship, publications could be reviewed and subjected to censorship, including monitoring and targeting of Fortún’s work specifically.

Juliana Acosta Gil invites you to explore censorship through Celia’s lens: Open the book. Read. Listen to Celia 💙

Hi everyone! My name is Beckam Polis, and I’m a junior in the @suhonors program from Chalfont, PA, triple majoring in Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Statistics on the pre-med track.

On campus, I serve as the Vice President of Academic Affairs in @cusesga and Vice Chair of the University Senate Student Caucus. I’m also an RA for the Honors LLC, a Pre-Medicine Ambassador, an Arts and Sciences Ambassador with @asmaxambassadorssu and a member of the professional pre-med fraternity, @phidenynu. I work as an EMT with @suambulance, research myelin at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and studied abroad with @syracuseumadrid last year. In my free time, I love playing sports and staying active.

I’m so excited to take you along with me today, and please reach out if you have any questions about getting involved on campus! by @suartsciences

Beckam Polis ’28 designed his own medical research study at @hopkinsmedicine. He did it before his junior year.

A Coronat Scholar and Renée Crown Honors student, Polis is majoring in neuroscience, biochemistry and statistics on a premed track, with his sights set on becoming a neurosurgeon 🧠

He's also been a research assistant in an @upstatemedical neuroscience lab since his second semester and serves as a crew chief for @suambulance.

His advice for his peers? Get to know faculty, ask for the internship, explore your interests and don't wait for permission.

💬 "I'm inspired to help other students with their journeys," Polis says.

Today is National New Friends Day, so let's hear it: who's a new friend (or a few) you've made this semester?

Tag them below and tell us how you met 🧡⬇️

Still finding your people? There's plenty of semester left! Try saying hi to the person next to you in class this week 👋 by @suartsciences

"Syracuse is helping me get my foot in the door." 🩺

@syracuseubiology major Gabby Garcia ’27 is one of 20 students in the first cohort of a new pilot program with @upstatemedical. Each spends 10 to 20 hours a week interning at the @upstategolisano Center for Special Needs, a national leader in treating patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Students work in one of four areas: an inpatient psychiatric unit, an outpatient psychiatric unit, a behavior analysis research lab, or the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program.

💬 "This program is a strong addition to my resume," Garcia says.

Hello!! My name’s Ryan. I’m currently a junior studying biology and neuroscience @suartsciences with minors in chemistry and public health. I’m studying at DIS Copenhagen @dis.copenhagen one of Syracuse’s world partner programs. I chose Copenhagen because of the wide range of STEM classes DIS offers, and Denmark has always been high on my travel bucket list.

This semester I’m taking:
- Human Health and Disease
- Medical Ethics
- Developmental Disorders
- Medical Simulations Lab
- Religion in Crisis (at the University of Copenhagen)

I live in a residential community made up entirely of study abroad students in Østerbro, one of the most sought-after neighborhoods for people in their early 20s.

Join me tomorrow as I show you what a typical day in Copenhagen looks like! by @suartsciences

@syracuseu's Indigenous student community is the largest it's ever been 🧡

This year, 63 new Indigenous students joined the University, bringing the total to 481. Helping welcome them are peer mentors from the Native Student Program, including two A&S | Maxwell students.

Mac Schmidt ’28, a @syracuseupsych student minoring in Native American and Indigenous studies, sometimes meets with mentees over dinner or at the program's home at 113 Euclid. One of her favorite activities is Beading Night, which she calls "a wonderful way to get in tune with our culture."

Shayla Benedict ’29, a journalism (@newhousesu) and environment, sustainability and policy dual major, answers new students' questions about the program, campus events and dorm life. "The generation before me inspired me to attend Syracuse, and it's become the perfect fit," she says.

Meet @syracuseu's new Beckman Scholars 🔬

Joanna Lepper ’28 and Sydney Choy ’28 each earned 15 months of full-time, mentored research support from the @beckmanfoundation.

Lepper, a biotechnology and applied data science (@ischoolsu) major, is building a tool in @syracuseubiology professor Angela Oliverio's lab that aims to turn the complicated downloads and commands behind protist genome analysis into a single line of code.

💬 "There's a new drive, after receiving this award, that really makes you want to changed the world, and a new realization that you can, if you put your mind to it," Lepper says.

Choy, a medicinal chemistry and biology major, is developing imaging agents in @suchemistry professor Robert Doyle's lab that could one day detect a progressive liver disease without invasive procedures.

💬 "Becoming a Beckman scholar has been an incredibly rewarding experience even just a few months in," Choy says. "Immediately, you are introduced to a whole new world of science and a network of individuals that span across disciplines."

📅 Are you a first- or second-year student interested in research? Applications for the next cohort are due Feb. 25, 2027, with an Intent to Apply form due Feb. 11. Eligibility details and the full list of faculty members are available at the 🔗 in our bio. by @suartsciences

If you've felt lonely at college, you're far from alone. Over half of college students report feeling this way, according to a 2026 national survey.

A&S is launching a new way to help: The Relationship Lab, a one-credit, two-day immersive residency where students learn the science behind healthy relationships, including communication, boundaries, conflict repair and attachment 🫂

Led by Tristan Martin, assistant teaching professor of marriage and family therapy, the residency is open to students in any major. "The residency will provide a foundation to better understand relationships and develop practical skills student can use in their everyday lives," he says.
