GHURBA / غربة

the feeling of longing for a place you’ve never truly called home.

this editorial began with a question: how can fashion communicate the experience of ghurba among Arab diaspora youth?

inspired by @saintlevant Exile, GHURBA explores the complexities of identity, displacement and belonging. through fashion, cultural symbolism and visual storytelling, the editorial reflects the experience of existing between two worlds, where one’s connection to home is shaped by memory, heritage and a longing for somewhere that may never have been personally experienced.

the kufiyyeh serves as a visual connection to Arab identity, representing the cultural ties we carry regardless of where we are born or raised.

for those who grew up between here and there.

a little coffee, a long conversation.

introducing RAKWE — a concept inspired by the traditions of Lebanese coffee and the moments shared around it.

the rakwe (ركوة) is a traditional pot used to brew coffee, a familiar part of Lebanese households and a ritual passed down through generations.

this product was designed to capture that feeling of familiarity, nostalgia and connection. from the earthy tones and traditional motifs to the packaging itself, each element was chosen to reflect the warmth of Lebanese homes and the culture surrounding coffee.

because in our culture, coffee has never really been just about coffee. it’s an invitation to sit, stay a little longer and share a moment. by @subtxt_studios

OFF COURT 🏀

A little New York basketball, a little ’90s hip-hop, and a lot of attitude. Jerseys were never just for the game. by @subtxt_studios

We were born to live — to play, belong, dream and become.

Through football and fashion, this series celebrates Arab youth and the futures they deserve to grow into. For every dream being lived, and every dream stolen too soon.

Who says culture can’t have attitude?

“The Jersey as Protest”

subtxt studios takes a closer look at football, identity, and the stories stitched into every shirt.

Middle East Archive — Taza, Morocco (2022)
No crowd, no chant — just colour, memory, and home, hanging out to dry.

Middle East Archive — Football (2024)
“Sympathize with Gaza” — worn under a jersey, revealed after a goal. Sport has never been neutral.

Athleta Magazine — “More Than Football Jerseys”
Not everyone wearing the kit plays the game. Some just carry the meaning.

Victor Edeh — Motherland (2024)
Football has always been where identity gets worn loudest. The kit, the flag, the body underneath it all telling the same story.

Sport has always been political. These are the moments that prove it. by @subtxt_studios

We left home, but home never left us. Now, we carry its traditions.

A small documentation of culture as it exists around us — not frozen in tradition, but lived, changed and carried forward by a new generation.

Home doesn’t always have to be a place.
