Artists @cynthiacamlinstudio @sue_danielson and @cara_jaye conducted research with their scientist collaborators to prepare for Surge: A Geography of Flow at @museumnwart. Watch the video to see photos from their field trips, their artistic process, and details of their artwork for the exhibition. Surge opens on October 3, 2026 by @sue_danielson

Does mitigating climate change come down an overarching good neighbor policy? Not completely, of course, but therein lies some truth. Here is a detail from “Synergy” created for Surge: a geography of flow, opening Oct 3 the Museum of Northwest Art. It considers the collaborative relationship between beaver created habitats and partial solutions to a looming die off the of western redcedar in the face of climate change. Many thanks to scientists W. Gregory Hood, PhD and Dr. David L. Peterson whose on the ground tours and sharing of deep knowledge was invaluable to the creation of this work. Thanks also to curator Chloe Dye Sherpe. @musuenofnwart @chloedyesherpe by @sue_danielson

Something recent. by @sue_danielson

Under cloudy skies, two artists, Cynthia Camlin and myself, one volunteer scientist, Greg Hood, with knowledge of beavers living in the estuary and a boatsman, took a trip to the untamed Milltown Island in the south fork of the Skagit River yesterday. We bushwacked our way through thick grass much taller than we are, across soggy uneven ground with not infrequent hidden drops created by the movement of water in the estuary. A single spruce tree provided a point of refrerence as we lept across these gaps in the landscape when possible. The banks were covered in thick, gooey mud and no one want to fall into that! But when we couldn’t make the full leap, we discovered that the tall grass had deep roots so we could use it as a roap to pull ourselves up over the banks. In the process our guide located four beaver dams. The tell was the sound of running water trickling through the dam. Then Greg would dig through the wall of grass until the dams appeared. We crossed most of them on foot. The generally nocturnal beavers were not in sight but crewed trees, beaver slides and, of course, the dams were evidence enough. Thanks to Cynthia for organizing the trip, Greg Hood for his expertice and generosity, and Brian Bonifaci for his boat and boat skills. All of this was facilitated by the Museum of NW Art in preparation for work Cynthia and I will have in the SURGE exhibit coming this fall and curated by Cloe Dye Sherpe. Stay tuned. #SURGE @cynthiacamlinstudio @cloedyesherpe @museumnwart by @sue_danielson
