We’re wrapping up our Women’s Small Business Month UB RISE spotlight series with a little something sweet! 💜✨ Meet Shakeema Romero, a Bridgeport-based culinary educator and owner of Suga and Spice Me, a cottage food business bringing flavor and creativity to communities across Connecticut. From organic hibiscus and Caribbean-style sorrel teas to fruit tarts and seasoning blends, Shakeema can often be found sharing her creations at farmers markets throughout the state. After participating in a UB entrepreneurship program in 2024, Shakeema gained new skills for building her business, growing her brand, and navigating the behind-the-scenes work that comes with entrepreneurship. Today, she’s putting those lessons into action, including right here at UB RISE! As Women’s Small Business Month continues, we’re proud to celebrate Shakeema and all the women entrepreneurs turning their passions into businesses, opportunities, and impact. 💜 #UniversityofBridgeport #WomensSmallBusinessMonth #WomenEntrepreneurs #SmallBusiness #BridgeportCT by @sugaandspiceme

Week 2 of Fall Cooking Club: All About Butternut Squash! We’re exploring seasonal foods! The kids described butternut squash as a mix between carrots and sweet potatoes. And the garlic, those sticky fingers had a lot to say! The fun part, Trying something new, sharing our thoughts, and learning that it’s okay if we don’t all like the same things! #foodeducation #cookingwithkids by @sugaandspiceme

From Passive to Active — Kids Experience🍽️ In collaboration with KES – KMAR Educational Services, we’re introducing a private, in-home program for kids ages 6–14 designed to build confidence, independence, and real-life skills. This program helps children think for themselves, share their ideas, and actively participate in everyday moments in the comfort of their own home. Through hands-on learning activities like story-building, interactive games, and optional kids cooking sessions, children are guided to take initiative, make decisions, and express themselves in meaningful ways. With a focus on cooking for children, I create engaging kitchen experiences where kids prepare and create meals, learning practical life skills while building self-confidence and independence. This program is perfect for private sessions, siblings, or small group gatherings, offering a fun and impactful way for children to grow and thrive. Day 2 of the @ramadannightmarketbpt reminded me why I love doing this, many smiles, kind conversations and people simply enjoying being together. Everyone showed up in good spirits and it felt like community in the best way. We will back Saturday & Sunday 4-8pm at The Arcade Mall. Come get your spices, tarts, teas and so much more. My assistant slept through most of it and woke up just in time to eat. Priorities. Thank you @naturalannieessentials for capturing all the good moments ❤️ by @sugaandspiceme
