Finally, #barcelona shows its splendor on the late afternoon October sun as seen from #montjuic park in the southwest of the city. A location defined by cycles of growth, experimental #urbanplanning, and the architecture of spectacle, Barcelona is a must-see for #architecture fans. #tourism #travel #travelphotography #spain #españa #fotografia #viaje #montjuïc #europetravel #scenic #urbanlandscape #cityscape #cityscapes #canon #canon5dmarkiii #traveldestinations by @syunphoto
The plaza in front of Richard Meier’s Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art has been adopted by the city’s skateboarding community. While tourists and visitors make their way to the museum doors, boarders can be seen grinding the edge of the ramp and hopping the plaza ledge, a great example of the unintended consequences of urban design. #architecture #barcelona #urbandesign #urbanplanning #urbanphotography #skateboard #skateboarding #streetphotography #barcelonaphotography #travelbarcelona #explorebarcelona #canon #canon5dmarkiii #canonphotography #motionblur #architecturephotography by @syunphoto
A pivotal building in the history of Modernist #architecture, Mies van set Rohe’s #barcelonapavilion was originally built for the 1929 World’s Fair. Today a recreation sits on the same site, faithful to the original in the combination of austere, proportional form and luxuriant material choice. The building is fundamentally a flat concrete slab over an open plan bounded by three walls, but in typical Mies fashion, those three walls are composed of two types of marble as well as a floor-to-ceiling glass window wall. Famous among architecture students are the mirrored plus-shaped columns, one of which is seen here, which Mies intended to reflect light in a way that would divert attention away from themselves. The interior is furnished with Mies’ equally famous Barcelona chair and ottoman, which have been reissued by the #knoll furniture company. #miesvanderrohe #barcelona #architecturelovers #architecturehistory #interiordesign #modernism #modernistarchitecture #travelphotography #architecturephotography #canonphotography #canon #canon5dmarkiii #spain #travelspain #travelphotography #explorebarcelona #explorespain #fotografia #fotodearquitetura #tourism #fotodeviaje by @syunphoto
One of Gaudí’s most famous works aside from the Sagrada Familia is Park Güell, commissioned in what was then the outskirts of #barcelona by the wealthy industrialist of that name. The architectural sequence of the park culminates in a massive plaza with this view overlooking the front houses and the #gràcia neighborhood beyond. Broken tile mosaics, a signature of #Gaudi in this and other works, give the architecture a fantasical, candy-land feeling. #architecture #photography #travelspain #explorespain #catalunya #fotodeldia #fotobarcelona #parkguell #parkgüell #arquitetura #modernisme #fotoarquitetura #urbanphotography #travelphotography #gaudi by @syunphoto

The columns of the #sagradafamilia are typical of how #Gaudi incorporated the then-popular #artnouveau styles into his work in a very personal way. Where traditional Gothic churches had columns leading directly into barrel or cross vaults, Gaudí designed columns shaped like tree trunks, whose split branches take the load from the roof. The spiral staircase behind the center column in this image leads to one of the spires, while the chapels continue behind the apse in the ambulatory that leads back beyond the right side of the picture. The polychromatic stained glass combined with the nature-inspired columns and carvings lend a joie de vivre to Gaudí’s magnum opus. #barcelona #architecture #spanisharchitecture #unescoworldheritage #travelphotography #catalunya #canon5dmarkiii #photography #architecturephotography #architecturelovers by @syunphoto
Weekend trip to Barcelona means more content soon! Barcelona’s top landmarks include the legendary #sagradafamilia by Catalan architect Antoni #Gaudí - who worked on its design for the last half of his life. Construction has been ongoing for 140 years, making it today’s equivalent of the multigenerational medieval Gothic cathedrals of Europe. Gaudí’s unique style combines the Gothic sense of verticality with a unique organic decoration and Art Noveau influences to create a unique style referred to locally as #modernisme as seen here on the eastern facade, with rich stone carvings everywhere symbolizing the beauty of life and birth of Christ. #barcelona #architecture #spanisharchitecture #unescoworldheritage #travelphotography #catalunya #canon5dmarkiii #photography #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #travelphoto #photooftheday #modernarchitecture by @syunphoto
The narrow streets of Segovia’s old town are not laid out in a grid pattern, defying easy spatial recognition. However, they serve as great backdrops for spontaneous moments of relief and contrast, as the late afternoon sun demonstrates here. On the right is the exterior of the altar of Segovia’s main Gothic cathedral. Students of American urbanism may find the density of such old towns foreign, but Segovia is far from the only such example. #spain #españa #travelphotography #europe #explorespain #spaintravel #studyabroad #photooftheday #canonphotography #canon5dmarkiii #landscapephotography #segovia #exploreeurope #amazinglandscape #destination #travelspain #urbanismo #urbanism #urbanphotography #streetphotography #fotografia #fotodeldia by @syunphoto
The Church of San Martín sits in the middle of Segovia’s old town, just off the Calle de Juan Bravo connecting the aqueduct and Playa Mayor. It is a much older structure than the more famous Cathedral, as evidenced by its Romanesque arches (rounded instead of the pointed Gothic arch that came into fashion later in the Middle Ages). #foto #fotografia #fotodeldia #segovia #spain #travelphotography #explorespain #fotografiadearquitetura #architecture #architecturephotography #romanesque #shotoniphone #iphonese #mobilephotography #europe #travelspain by @syunphoto
The Alcázar de Segovia, seen here bathed in evening sunlight from a sun break, is an imposing fortification that overlooks the valley immediately to the north of the old town in Segovia. The term “alcázar” is a bastardized version of the Arabic term for “castle”, a result of hundreds of Islamic influence on Spanish architecture and culture. Originally the site of a Roman fortification, this rocky outcropping provides a dramatic setting for a piece of architecture that has earned its role in Spanish history. It was here that Isabella I of Castille and León was installed as Queen, paving the way for the unification of the Spanish kingdoms under her and Ferdinand II of Aragon. More recently, in popular culture, the castle served as an inspiration for the Walt Disney Castle. #spain #españa #travelphotography #europe #explorespain #spaintravel #studyabroad #photooftheday #canonphotography #canon5dmarkiii #landscapephotography #segovia #exploreeurope #amazinglandscape #destination #travelspain by @syunphoto
Greetings from Segovia, Spain! I’ll be here through the middle of December and will hopefully be better about posting than the last two trips I took 🥲 First up, the famous Cathedral of Segovia, built in the 16th century in a late Gothic style. Centuries after the height of Gothic construction, Segovia built its main cathedral in that style, and it now overlooks the Plaza Mayor (main square) of the old town, protected in its entirety as a #unesco world heritage site. #spain #españa #travelphotography #europe #explorespain #spaintravel #studyabroad #photooftheday #canonphotography #canon5dmarkiii #landscapephotography #segovia #exploreeurope #amazinglandscape #destination #travelspain #fotodeldia #travelfoto #fotografie by @syunphoto
Rainy evening in Manhattan Chinatown. As the oldest of New York’s numerous ethnically Chinese enclaves, Manhattan Chinatown architecture is characterized by older construction and higher density. There is a greater proportion of Cantonese businesses as compared to, for example, Mandarin-heavy Flushing. You can see this in the number of HK-style cafes when you visit - and even in the hanging signs here, which have more traditional Chinese characters than what you would see in other Chinese enclaves in NYC. #nyc #newyork #manhattan #chinatown #chinatownnyc #nycphotographer #film #filmphotography #olympusom1 #kodakproimage100 #kodak #filmlook #streetphotography #streetscene #aesthetic #rainyday #shotonfilm #asianamerican #diaspora by @syunphoto
