Daria Syvakos (*1988, Donetsk, Ukraine) is an artist and researcher working with game engines, 3D modelling, video, and installation. Syvakos’ practice examines hidden infrastructures, such as energy networks, irrigation systems, and regimes of control, and their effects on bodies, memory, and land.

“What We Lost in the Water” explores the Stalinist so-called Plan for the Great Transformation of Nature, one of the largest attempts to reshape the climate for human benefit. The work draws on the artist’s family archive of photographs, letters, and fragments of fabric passed down from her grandmother. The video follows the spirit of a protagonist who drowned during the flooding of the Great Meadow (Velykyi Luh) in Soviet Ukraine, a thriving wetland ecosystem sacrificed to hydropower. The project traces the destruction of fertile land, villages, and forests, as well as wartime and post-industrial violence, culminating in the nuclear catastrophe.

I’m happy to invite you to my workshop 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨: 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙣𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 tomorrow at @ngbk_berlin.

The workshop explores what can be learned about a place when access to it is limited or impossible. Using the traces that remain available, we will create individual research atlases. Each atlas will follow one change over time and show where information is missing or uncertain. The final step is to turn this material into a first artistic sketch.

No previous experience is required.

Introducing Daria Syvakos (@syvakos )

„Meine Arbeit beginnt immer damit, dass ich Fragmente sammle: Archivbilder, Dokumente, technische Daten. Fast immer geht es dabei um Orte, die unzugänglich sind. Ich suche nach Belegen, analysiere und verarbeite sie auf meine Weise weiter. Ich fülle keine Lücken, sondern baue darauf ein spekulatives, anderes oder zukünftiges Narrativ.“

"Working from Traces: Artistic Research and Inaccessibility" Research Workshop with Daria Syvakos

This two-hour workshop introduces artistic research methods for working with places that cannot be fully accessed. It starts from a practice, shaped by film, installation, maps and digital environments, with a focus on infrastructures, archives and worldbuilding.

Participants will choose one site or research fragment and work with the material they can access: images, maps, notes, memories, public records or found documents. Through guided exercise, they will build a small research atlas, trace one change over time, mark what remains uncertain, and turn the material into a first artistic sketch.

The workshop is practice-based and intended for 10-12 participants. No technical knowledge is required.

A single-channel video exposing the material violence behind digital euphemisms, tracing connections from underwater data centers to cobalt mines, from Silicon Valley boardrooms to predator drone footage. Through alienated imagery that renders brutal realities with pop military aesthetics (militainment), the work reveals how tech’s promise of transcendence perpetuates earthly forms of racial, economic, and ecological domination.

The fundraising is complete! I love you all so muchhh! Please continue helping the main collector @ola_yeriemieieva

Hey dears, it’s my birthday and I have a wish — to see again my only family left — my grandpa Valentine. He is 87 now and has been living in occupation since 2014.

So I’m joining a fundraiser for Ukrainian defenders who fight in the Donetsk region and kindly ask for your support. Your donations protect someone’s parents, kids, friends or lovers.

For donations of 5€, I raffle a print of a photo I made in my last visit. That’s my fav playground where Valentine took me when I was lil!

🏁 A few weeks ago, during shelling, the brigade of @ola_yeriemieieva stepfather lost their last pickup truck along with the EW device mounted on it — the very one that volunteers managed to buy just half a year ago.

We are raising 6320€ to buy a vehicle and an EW device that will be used to transport soldiers.

This fundraiser is very important and urgent because having a car and EW equipment saves lives!

📍 For whom are we raising money?
Sergiy, stepfather of artist @ola_yeriemieieva serves in the Grenade launcher platoon of the Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky Separate Presidential Brigade for 4+ yrs. While fighting, he was wounded twice and returned to the front after rehabilitation.
His main task is to transport the soldiers to and from their positions.

📍My goal: 208 €
📍Total goal: 6320 €

A decade ago russia invaded Ukraine and began building a system of torture camps across the occupied territory. In my hometown, one such prison was set up in Izolyatsia, the art centre and the platform for cultural initiatives. russians came, seized the space, destroyed artworks, looted equipment and turned it into a detention facility, forced labour camp and military base. All these years people have been tortured, raped and murdered in Izolyatsia.

Mass incarcerations were put on stream through so-called filtration operations. Between 2014 and 2020 more than 160 illegal prisons were established in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. By the end of 2023, 104 other torture sites had been identified in 8 regions of Ukraine.

In 2021 @hypercyberspider and I started to work on a digital environment reconstructing some parts of Izolyatsia and re-imagining the space for mourning, remembering, collecting traces. It is shown for the first time at @kyivbiennial and will be displayed at @ngbk_berlin until June 9.

Kyiv Perennial opens in Berlin from February 23–25, 2024, symbolically marking the 10th anniversary of the Maidan Revolution and the 10th year of the Russian war against Ukraine. It is a continuation of the pan-European edition of the Kyiv Biennial 2023, which took place in several Ukrainian and EU cities. The Berlin edition is funded by @kulturstiftungdesbundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation) in a cooperation. A multi-part exhibition and an extensive program of events span four venues: @ngbk_berlin two locations on Alexanderplatz and in Hellersdorf, @betweenbridgesfoundation, and @pratergalerie.
⠀
Accompanying the exhibition and public program, a poster project draws attention to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and contextualizes it as a war within and against Europe. Several artists were invited to create one poster each with the leading question: What will happen to Europe if the war against Ukraine continues for ten more years?
⠀
Free admission to all locations and events.
