TLDR: Children learn best through play. Use this prompt in ChatGPT to get a list of games you can play with your children to develop skills such as “emotional regulation”, “impulse control”, “following instructions”, “moving from one place to the other” (great skills to stop sibling fighting, help you get them to get ready for pre-school/school on time, and just make life easier 🤷🏽‍♀️). All whilst developing your connection with your child 💁🏽‍♀️

You can switch out the skills you are looking for to get different games.

The prompt 👇🏽

“I am looking for games that I can play with my child that support them to develop:
- impulse control
- emotional regulation
To find these games use reputable play therapy and child development journals and child and family therapy models, for example theraplay”. by @taanitech

Part 1:
When I had my first child, I did not know that you can teach a child Arabic, pretty much from birth, without speaking the Arabic language fluently.

Despite being a qualified language teacher with a degree in Education..

A parent has something that no teacher or class has - lots of time with their child, doing repetitive tasks and routines.

If every time you bathe your baby you say “ماء” for water & sing “أستحم مثل البطة” (I’m bathing like a duck: shout out to @arabicseeds for the bath time rhyme!) your child will learn these words naturally. This is called language immersion. We often say colloquially “a child is like a sponge” & this couldn’t be truer for children ages 0-6. They aren’t just influenced by their environment, they literally ABSORB it. This is contrary to how languages are taught in mainstream education, where they are often introduced in secondary school. Or conversely, supplementary Arabic classes for children often start at 4 or 5 years old (still within the 0-6 window, but later than is ideal). Often children are taught how to read Arabic without understanding the words (as eloquently explained by Ellie on her course @muslimori on Udemy).

Using the principle of marginal gains, a non- Arabic speaking parent can capitalise on this opportunity by gradually introducing and consistently using Arabic words and phrases, with their baby, toddler or preschooler. This can be done through daily routines, play, singing, reading and more.
