ABA therapy cannot cure autism. You cannot teach illness out of a child. You cannot simply tell the body to stop an inflammatory process. That would be like trying to talk down a fever or cure dermatitis with a spell. I truly want parents to become more informed and to think critically. A child’s condition may involve several underlying issues, including neuroinflammation or encephalopathy, gastrointestinal inflammation, immune system dysfunction, autoimmune reactions, and infections. Metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as genetic factors, are also common. This is exactly why a proper diagnostic evaluation is essential. A personalized approach to autism care requires a comprehensive plan that includes evaluating the child’s overall health, addressing any identified problems, and incorporating both therapeutic and educational interventions. Parents, please hear me: ABA therapy alone is not enough. We also need to be honest: not every child will develop spoken language. However, we can help each child reach their potential and learn to use alternative forms of communication. You need to establish a reliable way to communicate with your child. Your child must be able to let others know when they are in pain, hungry, afraid, or have another basic need. They need to gradually learn how to communicate not only with you but also with other people, so they can get the help they need even when you are not there. This takes time—sometimes a great deal of time. However, teaching basic communication skills does not always require enormous financial resources. Parents can teach many of these skills themselves when they understand how to develop them step by step and practice them consistently. Can your child communicate their needs? Do they have a functional way to communicate? Can they communicate with other people without your help?
