In 1970, John M. Johansen gave Oklahoma City something truly radical. The Mummers Theater was an experiment in “Tinkertoy” architecture, a series of concrete pods held together by a web of industrial pipes. It was inspired by the internal logic of circuit boards, treating the movement of people like the flow of information. But in 2010, a catastrophic flood crippled the structure. Despite being a masterpiece of Brutalist design, it was demolished in 2014, leaving behind a silent ghost of a future that felt truly permanent. The Art: This is Machine-Age Brutalism. It’s about the beauty of the “stuff” that makes a building function—the pipes, the joints, and the raw concrete nodes. By looking at these ruins, we see a vision of a city that wasn’t afraid to look like a machine. Call to Action: An architectural masterpiece or an industrial nightmare?
