Should OT professors teach clinical examples?
This post isn’t about pointing fingers — it’s about inspiring continued critical thinking, elevating standards, and supporting positive change within our profession.
It’s okay to ask hard questions.
It’s okay to seek change.
It’s okay to want growth. 😊✨
One question worth exploring is this: Are the ACOTE standards high enough for OT professors?
We expect students to enter the profession clinically competent, occupation-centered, and ready to think critically — yet sometimes they’re told, “You’ll learn that on fieldwork.”
But is that fair?
Fieldwork educators often:
• Receive no additional pay
• Carry full caseloads
• Aren’t trained teachers or mentors
• Must work strictly within the constraints of their workplace
• Have limited time for in-depth clinical instruction
So is it reasonable — or fair — to expect fieldwork to fill all the gaps left by coursework? Or should our academic preparation be stronger, deeper, and more grounded in real-world clinical reasoning from the start?
What would it look like if OT professors consistently wove clinical examples, case studies, problem-solving scenarios, and functional reasoning into every course?
What if students weren’t waiting to “finally understand” occupation-based thinking until fieldwork?
What if the academic side of our profession felt more integrated, applied, and clinically relevant?
There may not be one perfect answer… but these are the conversations that move us toward excellence. 🔄💡
Our profession grows when we ask questions, challenge assumptions, and imagine something better.
