Ryan White died 35 years ago today. He was an ordinary kid who used his voice to help change the world. He was one of the first children with hemophilia to be diagnosed with AIDS after one of his blood treatments was tainted with HIV. Mike Smith co-founded the NAMES PROJECT AIDS Memorial Quilt (@aidsmemorialquilt) in 1987, which went on to become the largest community arts project in the world. What started as a "cry for help" became a monumental symbol for the preservation of love and memory. “When the doctor said, ‘You & your husband have HIV,’ it felt like the end. My husband had been in an accident a while ago, & got a blood transfusion – that was all it took… for our life to crash & burn… Chandra & I fell in love when we were just students. But Maa-Papa were against it: ‘You’re just 18’ ‘He’s from a different caste.’ But he was the best thing that could have happened to me… so we eloped & got married in 1993. And in the next few years, he got a job & we even had a son. But then suddenly Chandra started falling sick. Kabhi diarrhea ho jaata unko toh kabhi cough & cold. Months later, the doctors said, ‘It’s HIV’… Back in 1999, kisi ke paas HIV ki sahi jaankaari nahi thi. But if you contracted it, you would automatically get shunned. Our doctors told us, ‘This could kill you,’ but the nurses looked at us as if we were criminals. So we decided not to tell our families. But after 2 years of constantly going in & out of hospitals, when the relatives got suspicious, we had to tell them. Uske baad toh it was just years of ‘Ladki ka character loose tha.’ Everything was falling apart around me. But I couldn't afford to fall apart… who'd be there for Chandra & my son? So I sold off whatever we had – jewellery, our house. Somehow, we managed; for years, we lived with no support. Our friends had isolated us & our family refused to even talk to us… so my life revolved around Chandra & my son. But then the worst happened. Chandra passed away in May 2005. All our money had dried up. And my son was just 6. I could not let go…so in 2006, I found a job as a receptionist. Life was going on, until…a colleague got me a volunteer job with a group of people living with HIV. And there my life took another turn. As I started talking to people, I felt lighter. Soon, I got more involved – I was made a peer counselor. But most importantly, I even found a community of people who were ready to stand by me. It’s been 25 years since I 1st tested positive… Shuru ke kuch saal bohot mushkil the. But over time, I have learnt to live with it. I know this life of mine is a gift… I am going to make sure to cherish it – by fighting for every HIV+ person’s rights.” #WorldAIDSDay
