What was the first Hindi film to portray queer desire? We may not have a definitive answer. But we know that the 1971 film Badnam Basti was one of the earliest to explore the "forbidden" desire between men. Directed by Prem Kapoor, this film didn't have any outright declarations of queerness. Its intimacy was in the subtext. It was in the shared cots and the eye-to-eye glances between its leads. As actor Amar Kakkad who played one of the roles later said in an interview with Scroll.in, the film touched on the theme of laundebazi or homosexuality subtly. To say the least, the film was ahead of its time. But the film failed at the box office and vanished for decades. In 2019, a researcher found a copy hidden in an archive in Germany. It has been digitised and is now available to watch on YouTube now. Have you watched any other older films in India that portrayed queerness with a sensitive lens? Let us know in the comments below. #RewindingPride is a queerbeat initiative to map India's unique queer history and make it accessible to more folks. •D•A•I•L•Y• •F•O•C•U•S• . Welcome to my tribute to directors series where I’m recreating photostories inspired by iconic films, all in my unique style. Today, I’m paying homage to the legendary “BASU CHATTERJEE” with “BATON BATON MEIN”. The film tells the story of Tony Braganza, a shy engineer who finds love in chance encounters with Nancy during his daily commute. As Tony navigates family expectations and social pressures, he hesitantly expresses his feelings through everyday moments. I’ve reimagined this beautiful tale in the streets of Delhi. . After knowing Freya and Malaya were getting married, I was planning to shoot something that truly felt like them. We were discussing what to shoot, where to shoot, something that looked very real. Then one random day, Freya said, “Before we get married… we’re building our own house.” That was it. I picked up my handicam, went over, and told them to just be themselves. Half-built walls, soft light, no posing — just two people building a home and a life. Shot in under 30 minutes. Some stories don’t need planning. . Joyland (2022) dir. Saim Sadiq A quietly devastating portrait of desire and repression, Joyland follows a middle class Pakistani family whose fragile balance is disrupted when Haider takes a job at an erotic dance theater and falls in love with Biba, a transgender performer. The film gently exposes the suffocating weight of patriarchy, gender roles, and unspoken longing, revealing how personal freedom often comes at the cost of social belonging. Saim Sadiq treats intimacy with tenderness, allowing silence and hesitation to speak louder than confrontation. Ali Junejo delivers a deeply vulnerable performance, embodying Haider’s confusion and quiet yearning with heartbreaking restraint, while Alina Khan is extraordinary as Biba, bringing strength, charisma, and aching humanity to the screen. Rasti Farooq adds emotional depth through a portrayal shaped by sacrifice and quiet despair. With its soft visual palette, natural performances, and compassionate direction, Joyland stands as a courageous and profoundly human film about love, identity, and the pain of living truthfully in a world that resists change. . . . . . #joyland #saimsadiq #pakistanicinema #worldcinema #cinephile #filmlover #queercinema #arthousecinema
