One of the most tragic and powerful stories of the Mahabharata begins at the swayamvara of the princesses of Kashi. To secure brides for his half brother Vichitravirya and protect the future of Hastinapur, Bhishma entered the swayamvara uninvited, defeated the assembled kings and abducted the three sisters Amba, Ambika and Ambalika by force. But Amba had already chosen the man she loved, King Shalva. When Bhishma learned this, he allowed her to leave and return to him. Yet society’s idea of honour proved stronger than love itself. Shalva rejected Amba, refusing to marry a woman who had been taken away by another man. Rejected by the man she loved and abandoned by the man who had abducted her, Amba returned to Bhishma and demanded that he take responsibility for destroying her life. Bhishma refused. His terrible vow of celibacy stood above everything else, even Amba’s suffering. That refusal transformed Amba’s pain into rage. She crossed kingdoms searching for someone capable of defeating Bhishma. Even Parashurama, Bhishma’s own guru, could not bring him down. Finally, Amba turned toward Shiva and performed severe tapasya. Shiva granted her a prophecy that in another birth, she would become the cause of Bhishma’s death. Amba embraced fire willingly and was reborn as Shikhandi. Years later, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the same woman whose voice and pain had once been ignored became the reason the greatest warrior of the Mahabharata finally fell.
