🫀ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION:
VASCULAR REMODELING AND LOSS OF ELASTICITY
High blood pressure does not first “clog” the artery — it remodels the vessel.
CONCEPT
Chronic arterial hypertension = sustained increase in the force of blood against the vessel wall
Arteries (elastic structures) adapt to hemodynamic overload
PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISM
Continuous mechanical stress → endothelial injury (inner layer of the vessel)
Endothelial dysfunction → reduced vasodilator nitric oxide
Vascular smooth muscle proliferation + collagen deposition
Result:
• Thickening of the arterial wall
• Reduced compliance (elasticity)
• Increased vascular stiffness
KEY PROCESS
Vascular remodeling
Progressive structural adaptation of the artery to elevated pressure
HEMODYNAMIC IMPACT
Rigid artery → reduced ability to expand
→ Increased peripheral resistance
→ Cardiac overload (especially left ventricle)
SILENT PROGRESSION
Slow and asymptomatic process
By the time symptoms appear, damage may already be significant
ASSOCIATED COMPLICATIONS
• Coronary artery disease
• Stroke (CVA)
• Heart failure
• Chronic kidney disease
CLINICAL INSIGHT
Hypertension does not begin as “blockage” — it begins as loss of vascular function
Regular blood pressure monitoring is essential
✅Early intervention = prevention of irreversible structural damage

This week’s lab consisted of arterial lines!
🤔 An arterial line (a-line) is a thin, flexible tube (catheter) that is placed directly into an artery, usually in the wrist (radial or ulnar artery), groin (femoral artery), or arm. We know it’s an artery in the ultrasound because as you can see in the clips, it pulsates! 💪🏼
👉🏼 A-lines can be placed on the patient once they’re asleep or under local anesthesia where the patient may feel some pressure but no sharp pain.
Why is it used?
🎯 Accurate blood pressure monitoring: Unlike a cuff that inflates every 3-5 minutes, an A-line gives instant, continuous readings, which is important for critically ill patients or during surgery.
🩸 Frequent blood sampling: It allows easy access for drawing blood, especially for tests like blood gases that check oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
💡It’s mainly used in ICU patients, major surgeries, or situations where close monitoring of blood pressure and oxygen levels is critical!
No we didn’t place A-lines on each other, but we do have awesome mannequins to practice on that have pulsatile blood flow to mimic a real artery!
💉Do you know what you absolutely cannot have with A-lines?
Take the poll down below! 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
• ↑ rigidez arterial
• ↑ carga aterosclerótica ao longo da vida
E é aqui que entram duas armas que realmente mudam desfecho:
🧠 1. Estatinas
Não são apenas “remédios para colesterol”.
São moduladores de risco:
• Reduzem LDL de forma consistente
• Estabilizam placa aterosclerótica
• Diminuem inflamação vascular
• Reduzem eventos maiores (IAM, AVC, morte CV)
💡 A mensagem é simples:

November is #PHAwarenessMonth.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (#PAH) is a rare, life-threatening disease where blood vessels in the lungs are narrowed, blocked or destroyed, making the right side of the heart work harder.
PAH is more common in women than men, and the average age at the time of diagnosis is 50 years. It can't be cured, but treatments can help manage the disease and make patients feel better.
Learn more about the disease and its symptoms at the link in our bio.
