You may be seeing more than “just clumsiness.”
If your child struggles with coordination, handwriting, or crossing the midline, there may be more going on than meets the eye! 👀
In this reel, Amanda and Rachel are addressing visual tracking by leading hand-eye coordination while weight bearing on hands and knees! Anytime the visual system leads head movement left and right, you’re going to be working on the ATNR. ✍️
For this week, we will be releasing two new videos from Amanda and Rachel daily, Monday through Friday! Each video will cover a different potentially retained primitive reflex and how those unintegrated primitive reflexes show up in kids.
Comment REFLEXES and we will send a link to the series straight to your IG DMs! 💙

Did you know retained reflexes can be related to behavioral and sensory differences?
When babies don’t have the chance to integrate a reflex, for whatever reason, the pathways in their brain become disrupted. This disruption can cause difficulty with balance or coordination, trouble focusing or maintaining attention, challenges fine motor skills, behavioral issues such as anxiety or hyperactivity, trouble focusing, issues with emotional regulation, sensory differences, and more.
This topic may be “trendy” right now, but it’s something Achieve has ALWAYS done. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to send a message or reach out for a free 30 minute consultation.

ATNR reflex integration exercise 🙌
• 4 Point Kneeling (4PK) with elbows / arms extended
• Place toy/game either sides of the body (game on one side, matching sheet on other in video examples)
• Have the child rotate their head side to side to move the toys/items across midline on either side!
• Encourage the stabilising elbow to maintain extension!
Not sure what the ATNR is? I’ve got you!
The Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) is a Primitive Reflex which is developed in utero and present at birth! 🤰
Primitive reflexes integrate or mature as infants develop and grow. Although sometimes a reflex can be retained, otherwise known as “unintegrated”.
An unintegrated ATNR reflex can present as:
• Low coordination and balance
• Difficulty with reading and writing
• Reduced gross and fine motor performance
• Left/Right confusion
• Poor visual tracking
• Difficulty bike riding
• Poor attention and focus

If I had a clumsy or uncoordinated kid… I’d start right here. 👇
These 2 powerful exercises help integrate the ATNR reflex—one of the most common retained primitive reflexes that messes with balance, coordination, and focus. 😵💫
Here’s how they work:
🔁 Exercise 1: Lizard Crawl Pattern
👉 On the belly
👉 Turn head right — flex right elbow & knee, left side stays straight
👉 Turn head left — flex left elbow & knee, right side straightens
🔥 This activates cross-body coordination and retrains how the brain processes movement with head turning and limb activation.
🧠 Exercise 2: Head Turns on All Fours
👉 Start on hands and knees, arms locked out
👉 Keep the body still as you slowly turn head left, pause 2–3 seconds, then right
🔥 This helps rewire the brain to separate head movement from body movement, a key function disrupted by retained ATNR.
Why it matters:
A retained ATNR can cause:
🚫 Poor coordination
🚫 Trouble crossing midline
🚫 Messy handwriting
🚫 Awkward posture or fidgeting
🚫 Meltdowns during fine motor tasks
These movements may look simple, but they’re rewiring your child’s nervous system in real time. 💥
👇 Try these out and tell me what you notice!

STNR/ATNR integration using a headlamp 🔦
This is one of my favorite ways to work on reflex integration and here’s why..
It’s ACTIVE integration. A lot of approaches have kids passively moving their head through the pattern over and over but I believe the nervous system needs active intentional movement to truly integrate
In my clinical experience kids with retained STNR and ATNR often move in limited range and having something worth finding at the end of that range naturally drives them to go further than they would otherwise
Here’s what’s happening 👇
Quadruped while looking DOWN at a small card between their hands then UP at the large board to find the match loading and moving through the STNR
Board positioned to the SIDE so they rotate their head to ring items with the headlamp hitting the ATNR on both sides
The headlamp forces the HEAD to lead the movement. You can’t cheat with just your eyes
👀 This activity also works on visual perceptual skills and ocular motor skills so they truly get so much out of ONE activity
Save this for your next session or with your child!

What you’re seeing isn’t just a stretch or a random movement...
It’s actually a primitive reflex integration exercise that helps the brain learn better control of the body.
This one targets the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) — also known as the “archer reflex.”
If the ATNR stays active past early childhood, it can make school harder because it affects:
➡️ Hand-eye coordination
➡️ Reading & handwriting
➡️ Crossing midline
➡️ Focus & attention
➡️ Emotional regulation
➡️ Balance & posture
(P.S.Comment "INFO" for a free guide full of other useful exercises!)
Kids with an active ATNR often:
• Avoid reading or writing
• Get frustrated easily
• Struggle with sports
• Have messy handwriting
• Mix up letters or words
• Have trouble sitting still
Turning the head from side to side while the body holds still helps the brain learn to separate head movement from body movement — a major upgrade for focus, learning, and emotional control.
We are also using a red light laser to enhance the effects, but it is not essential, so you can still do it from home!
Just 30 seconds a day can help:
✨ Calm the nervous system
✨ Improve school performance
✨ Boost coordination & sports skills
✨ Support reading & handwriting
✨ Make after-school transitions easier
Parents are always shocked by how simple it is — and how much it explains about behavior and learning.
If you want more simple, at-home exercises like this we made a FREE Primitive Reflex Guide for you.

🎯 Integrating Reflexes through Play!
When we work on TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex) and ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex), it’s not just about movements — it’s about building the foundation for postural control, coordination, and attention.
💪 Through play-based activities, children learn to move with better body awareness, balance, and bilateral coordination — skills essential for reading, writing, and speech motor planning!
✨ Play is therapy, and therapy is play — when we integrate reflexes, we empower children to move, learn, and communicate with ease.

The Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) is closely linked to dyslexia due to its impact on a child’s development. When the ATNR is retained, it can disrupt motor skills and coordination, which are crucial for reading and writing. It has huge impact on learning.
Signs of Retention/Impact on ADLs are noticed :
• Decreased hand-eye coordination
• Poor handwriting
• Uncoordinated gait
• Poor balance
• Poor visual-motor skills and tracking
• Problems with math and reading
• Difficulty crossing midline.
Good news! It can be integrated and one of the exercises is shown above .
Have the child get in quadruped with their head facing forward. Ask them to turn their head from up and then down chin tucked in while keeping arms straight as shown in video. Do this twenty times each day . While they turn their head, observe for bending at the elbows or shifting of the body from side to side. If these movements are present, the reflex is likely retained due to neck and shoulder movements continuing to be connected and not yet independent of each other.

Here’s what it means when that elbow bends with head turns ↘️💪
What you are noticing could be the sign of a retained Asymetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) hanging around!
1️⃣ A retained ATNR has been linked in research to challenges with attention, learning, and skills like reading and writing.
2️⃣ This reflex naturally divides the body left to right, and when it’s not fully integrated, communication between the two sides of the brain can be trickier.
3️⃣ Supporting integration can help the brain work together more smoothly and encourage learning, coordination, and easier daily activities.

The ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) is a primitive reflex present at birth that links head movement with limb position.
While it plays an important role in early development, it is expected to integrate within the first months of life. When retained, ATNR may influence a child’s ability to cross midline, coordinate both sides of the body, and perform tasks requiring dissociation of head and limb movements.
These patterns can impact functional skills such as reading, writing, and participation in play.
Intervention often focuses on promoting bilateral coordination and controlled, cross-body movement within meaningful activities.
If you’re wondering if primitive reflexes may be affecting your child’s, movement, learning or regulation, pediatric physiotherapy can help
