A 102-degree fever and a potential hospital trip… and I was still worried about dropping a class. 🤒📚
Why do we do this to ourselves? We’re taught to grind until we break, but sometimes the strongest thing you can do is admit you need help. Your health isn’t a hurdle—it’s the foundation. Let’s stop romanticizing the burnout. 🛑✨

If your student has ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, or another learning difference, not all colleges provide the same level of support.
Most schools offer basic accommodations.
But some colleges go much further — with structured programs, learning specialists, executive function coaching, and ongoing support.
That difference can completely shape a student’s college experience.
And it’s something many families don’t realize until it’s too late.
If this is something you’re thinking about, I’d be intentional about researching support early.

You might already feel exhausted about the college search process and it hasn’t even started yet. You’re anxious, your teen is anxious and that stress is stretching into other parts of your life. And if your teen is navigating mental health challenges on top of everything else, the admissions process can feel a lot less like an exciting discovery and more like survival.
At the end of February, I brought this conversation into a room full of school counselors, and other educators at the Indiana Association for College Admissions Counseling Conference.
The session I presented was on the mindful college search focused on practical mindfulness based strategies for helping students navigate this process with less stress and more clarity, including tools for researching campus mental health resources during the college search process.
If you are part of a community organization or work in an education and you’re looking for a presenter on this topic, I’d love to connect. This is the work I genuinely love!

I’ve spent my career working within student support systems.
Now I’m studying them at the doctoral level.
And I’m noticing something we need to name.
The structure around social work, counseling, and student support is shifting.
Not in theory. In practice.
The expectations are still high.
The needs are still urgent.
But the investment in the people doing the work is not keeping pace.
As a doctoral student in a practice-based program (DSW), I’m also seeing how limited funding pathways are for this kind of work.
This is important because this is the work that directly impacts how students are supported, how systems function, and whether student brilliance is protected or overlooked.
So I’m asking the community:
1. What are you seeing?
2. What are you experiencing in your role, your team, your system?
This conversation is shaping what I’m building next.

Perfectionism often hides anxiety.
It tells you:
“If I just try harder, I won’t disappoint anyone.”
But the pressure never actually goes away.
Real growth happens when students learn:
• mistakes are part of learning
• worth isn’t based on performance
• rest improves focus
You don’t have to earn your value.

1. Ask them if it is mathematically possible to pass the course.
2. If no, make an appointment with your faculty advisor and drop the course.
3. If yes, ask them how to better prepare for tests and quizzes, and look into tutoring options in the Learning Center.]
🚨Can your learner be denied an assessment due to attendance concerns? Short answer is Yes!
🧠Some of these issues are related to Mental Health or Medical concerns and I would suggest having a provider write a medical or mental health plan to share with the school is important.
🧐Get curious if you are dealing with School Avoidance (DBT is proven to be helpful); however, your learner may have mental health or trauma experience that they need to work out with a professional.
👩🏾🤝👩🏽 Try to collaborate with your school team, if your Learner has a MH specialist involve them in this collaboration. Late starts can be helpful or a soft start (leaner starts the day in counselor’s office, a safe adult’s classroom).
🧘🏻♀️🧘🏽♂️Mental Health days are important; however, if your learner is asking for one weekly, get curious and seek help.

Midterms can be a stressful time for many families.
Students may be juggling exams, deadlines, and pressure to perform. Parents may be trying to support while watching their child feel overwhelmed.
A few reminders for this season:
✨A grade does not define a person’s worth.
✨Breaks, sleep, and balance are important for learning.
✨Feeling stressed during exams is common, and support can help.
If you are a student feeling the pressure, or a parent trying to help your child through this time, you are not alone.
Taking care of your mental health during busy academic seasons is just as important as studying for exams. 🤍

Jokes aside, the week leading up to finals can be a lot. Trying to manage a full course load, work responsibilities, and maintain your mental health isn’t easy. It is worth it? Absolutely. ✨
What I do to set myself up for success:
🌷 Set alarms as a reminder to take breaks
🌷 Easy access to food & water during long study sessions
🌷 Plan / outline your assignments ahead of time
🌷 Setting boundaries, guilt free. Right now, your focus is getting through these final weeks of academics
🌷 Remembering you’ve done hard things before… and you can do it again
You’ve got this. One assignment (& coffee) at a time. 💗💪🏼💭☕️

There are a lot of reasons why.
Not all schools have the room to include all of the requisite conversations and scaffolding needed to support kids through the college application process. We also have to consider this important point: college isn’t for everyone. Dedicating a lot of time to something that doesn’t meet the needs of all learners isn’t always best practice.
So that’s what I do. Remember, I work with high schoolers every single day and have spent the last half of my career helping them with the personal essay. I know how to support students with varying needs and backgrounds while helping them meet their goals.
As part of my training, I worked with Brown University to learn how to best support students through the college application process, and I love using all of this experience to help families through this process.

Most colleges offer accommodations.
But that’s not the same as real support.
If your student has ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, or executive functioning challenges, this is one of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of the college search.
The difference isn’t access.
It’s structure, consistency, and accountability.
These are 5 colleges that truly do it well.
Comment SUPPORT and I’ll send you my free guide with 20+ colleges + exactly how to evaluate support programs.
