❤️ I MOVED AWAY FROM MY GRANDKIDS. ON PURPOSE! 😳 Yep! Mike and I moved from Washington to Nebraska to be closer to our adult kids and grandkids. I pictured time together, lots of everyday moments, and more opportunities to be Mimi. And it was for a while. But things change and wasn’t THAT a fun little reality check! 😂 Our adult kids had jobs, friends, schedules, and lives of their own. Our Grands lives got busier with school, friends, sports… Imagine that! 😂 And we discovered something else. We didn’t love living in Nebraska! We stayed FOUR YEARS, and we wouldn’t trade those years for anything! ❤️ We shared so many precious everyday moments with our grandkids. But eventually, we had to ask ourselves… Were we going to spend the rest of our lives living somewhere we didn’t love? So we moved back to Washington. Over 1,800 miles away! And guess what? We didn’t become less important to each other. We just had to learn different ways to stay close. ❤️ Now we visit about four times a year, our grandkids spend a week with us every summer, and we take family vacations together. Meanwhile, Mike and I are traveling, exploring, and building a life WE love! I want my grandkids to know I adore them AND see a Mimi who’s living a pretty darn interesting life of her own! 😂❤️ And that’s why I created resources to help other grandparents navigate these decisions! ❤️ Thinking about moving closer to your adult kids and grandkids? Or looking for ways to stay connected across the miles? Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the link to my FREE Moving Closer Guide and other grandparenting resources at www.christiperillo.com! ➡️ Active Grandparenting today is no small feat. We’re showing up, wrangling toddlers like it’s a sport, strapping squirmy bodies into five-point harnesses, and learning to navigate the Nanit monitor split screen because it’s not optional. We do it all with love—but hey, grandparents also appreciate a little acknowledgment of how we’re doing. 💙For the grandparents: We love being part of the everyday moments—the sticky fingers, the bouncy house, the hour long bedtime stories. But we also love a thoughtful thank-you, a photo sent just because, or a FaceTime call when the kids are in a happy place… those moments mean so much. Knowing our time and effort are respected and appreciated. We’re not just help—we feel like dynamic contributors to family life. 💙For the parents: You’re juggling so much. Parents who incorporate grandparents well treat them like partners, even though grandparents often provide free childcare. They set clear boundaries, offer genuine gratitude, and take the time to explain why routines matter (yes, even if Grandma raised four kids without a sleep sack). When you see us not just as grandparents, but as teammates in this beautiful chaos—it creates connection across generations that will benefit your kids for life. 💙Grandparents tell me in the comments if this resonates with you? 🩷When I was making this I got so emotional because it’s so true. Feeling all the grandparent feels and loving every second we get with our grands. ❤️ But one of the best things about becoming a grandparent, is how it’s deepened our relationship with our children. ➡️ Is this true for you too? Type ACTIVE in the comments for a parent approved program that supports grandparents with resources, trainings and support the Grandparenting years.💙 ✅✅ Be sure to like, share with your children and let me know how old your grands are. There’s a difference between teaching someone how you want your children raised and making them feel like they can never get it right. Modern parenting has evolved, and grandparents have a responsibility to respect parents’ decisions, learn new approaches, and adapt when necessary. But there’s another side of this conversation that deserves our attention. When grandparents feel constantly corrected, evaluated, or criticized, they may begin to experience the relationship through a lens of anxiety rather than connection. They become so focused on avoiding mistakes that they lose some of the spontaneity, playfulness, and confidence that make grandparent-grandchild relationships so special. And sometimes what sounds like a disagreement about a snack, a bedtime routine, or a phrase is experienced as something much bigger: Am I still valued here? Do they trust me? Is there room for me to be myself? Of course, parents have every right to establish expectations for their children. And important safety concerns and boundaries should always be respected. But not every difference requires correction. Not every misstep needs to become a referendum on someone’s character. Grandparents need to make room for new ways of parenting. And adult children can make room for the imperfect humanity of the people who raised them. Healthy intergenerational relationships aren’t built on perfection. They’re built on mutual respect, flexibility, curiosity, and the ability to repair when we get things wrong. We can ask people to grow without making them feel that who they are isn’t enough. I’m curious: Have you experienced this tension as a grandparent or as a parent trying to establish your own way of raising children? #ModernGrandparenting #Grandparenting #AdultChildren #FamilyRelationships #IntergenerationalRelationships

Distance can feel heartbreaking. Many grandparents worry that living far away means they’ll never have the close relationship they hoped for with their grandchildren. But new research offers something deeply hopeful. A 2025 systematic review found that children’s wellbeing is influenced less by grandparent involvement alone and more by the quality of that relationship. Grandparents who are warm, emotionally responsive, and supportive are associated with better child mental health, while controlling or highly critical interactions are associated with poorer outcomes. This doesn’t mean distance is easy. It means that love has many ways of reaching a child. A weekly phone call. A shared tradition. A birthday letter they’ll keep for years. Remembering the little details of their lives. Helping them feel seen, valued, and deeply loved. Children don’t just remember who was physically present. They remember who made them feel like they belonged. If you’re loving your grandchildren from afar, don’t underestimate the difference you’re making. The miles matter. But your warmth matters even more.
