On March 8th, we hosted the inaugural Next Stride Amputee Running and Mobility Clinic at Messiah University, presented by Ottobock Care (Ability). Led by @samschaefer1, a fitness professional and below the knee amputee, participants got the opportunity to demo running blades, refine their gait, and learn adaptive fitness strategies specific for amputees. She launched the “100 Strong” campaign to secure support for her 2026 paratriathlon season, including race entries, travel expenses, and adaptive equipment. She’s an Olympic hopeful for the 2028 LA Paralympic Games and an ambassador for both the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation of Canada, launching the “Dyfying Dystonia Series,” and AdaptX, a company focused on making fitness and sport more accessible. just because an athlete is wheelchair bound does not mean that they are unable to complete a lower body day. considerations for training athletes in wheelchairs: ❤️reduce the amount of energy lost through transfers. group exercises accordingly. ❤️find modifications to meet the client where they are. for example, holding on to a post when squatting provides more stability for athletes who may struggle with balance ❤️make sure to program shoulder and core training as those are essential in maintaining independence in a wheelchair! let me know if you like this, and share it so others can see :) want to learn how to train adaptive clients? get certified through @adaptx.coach ! it’s a great course that i personally think every personal trainer or health professional should take.
