Wheelchair accessible vehicles are SO. EXPENSIVE. And cost prohibitive to a good majority of disabled people. Transportation is so important to how we function in society and, especially in most parts of the United States, public transportation is just not adequate (or accessible). Private transportation is needed to live your most independent life and if you use a wheelchair, this is going to come with a hefty pricetag of vehicle modifications and adaptive equipment just to bring you up to baseline of what your able bodied peers can do. I have my own van now, and it has been INCREDIBLE. I can go where I want, when I want, with ease and without danger of falling over while unloading my travel chair. I can bring my custom chair out with me which increases my confidence and lowers my pain levels. But, it took me TWO YEARS to access funding for the $60k of modifications this van needed for me to drive independently. On top of the base price of the vehicle (which we had to pay for).
It should not be this hard. I am grateful everyday that I was able to access this. But it should not have been so hard.
If you are interested in a full three part deep dive into those timelines shown on the wall and the whole process of how I got the funding for the adaptations for my van, those are over on my YouTube channel! Link in bio.
Now that I have my van, I will be using it to get to work where I continue to advocate for the rights of disabled people like me to access the services and support that they deserve 💪

Visited my friends @rolling.in.paradisesales & @rolling.in.paradise to help set up my @stricker.handbikes handbike this past weekend.
This is why purchasing adaptive equipment through a vendor that is disabled owned & operated is so important. John and Annalisa have been incredibly involved with my success using this hand bike. From deciding which equipment I should go forward with purchasing to getting it set up perfectly on my chair.

OTs loveee adaptive equipment! Sock aids, shoe horns, leg lifters, and reachers can help individuals modify tasks so they are easier and more doable.
•
Adaptive equipment can be especially helpful for lower extremity dressing for those who may not be able to bend over.
•
Other adaptive equipment not shown includes a long handled sponge, grab bars, shower chairs, button hooks, dressing sticks and more!

😎 I had too much fun trying @kitchenmamaus new “Epic One Multifunction Opener” - it not only opens different types of bottles, it also has functions that help you pull off the tops of cans that have a tab on them, as well as those weird circular orange juice style “pull tabs.”
🙌 I found it very easy to use, and as someone who LOVES color and whimsy, I appreciate the cute design and bright colors. As I’m often saying: adaptive equipment and assistive devices do NOT have to be boring or depressing!

🌟This is not a sponsored review, I bought this product myself after liking a previous product from KitchenMama (hands free one touch electronic jar opener).
What do you think? Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget?

Over the next few weeks I am going to show y’all some of the adaptive equipment thst I have been using that has not only increased my independence, but also my QUALITY of life.
First up is the SCOUT scooter attachment that I have been using for the last month or two.
I have never used any sort of power assist for the last 19 years of being a quad, just relied on grit and stubbornness as a full time manual chair user.
But I can’t express how awesome it is to be able to have this to give my shoulders a break as I chase my daughter around!
As of this moment, I have zero complaints about this product.
And whenever I get a new piece of adaptive equipment I base whether it was worth it off of three categories and for every category I have, it passes with spades!
The Wheel Life Rating System
Can I use it independently:✅
Does it function as advertised: ✅
Does it increase my independence?✅
I will give a more in depth review later on if y’all would find that helpful!
My brotha @biggunmike1997 from U2Mobility was amazing to work with and offered all the help he could from across the country.
Also shoutout to @benleclair and @halhargrave for answering all my questions about the attachment it self. I am very grateful for their input. This community is awesome and we all have to help each other when we can and how we can!

At SMILE, we work alongside families of children with disabilities, providing therapy, respite, adaptive equipment, hospital support, and so much more.
Your support means families don’t have to face these challenges alone. Together, we can ensure every child has the chance to thrive.

This is what inclusion looks like 🤍 Lalelei uses her Tumble Forms foam chair to support her posture and help her participate in everyday moments. Adaptive equipment empowers children with CP to show up fully — just like every child deserves 🫶 #AdaptiveEquipment #SpecialNeedsMama #InclusionMatters #CPStrong #TumbleForms #MedicallyFragile #DisabilityRepresentation #AllAbilities #LaleleiStrong
This is how I transfer as a #nonambulatory #wheelchairuser into a chair at the hair salon to get my hair washed using a #transferboard ! Through years of abuse on my shoulders working out and trying to walk, I prefer to practice safety. Falling could be very detrimental to my life and independence and it just isn’t worth the risk! I need to preserve my shoulders for as long as possible and that means using adaptive equipment to do it. The world isn’t always adapted for us, so we gotta figure things out so we can still get the hair done and look fabulous 💁🏼♀️ #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityvisibility #spinalcordinjury #paralyzed #paraplegic #paralysis
There is many adaptive equipment for people with disabilities to stay active. Personally I love my Handcycle rides during the afternoons. As an active woman I want to stay fit and feel good. #womenempowerement
@wheelchairboarding brought some cool toys to the Wheel Together Retreat at @aoecmaine!!
We had a blast testing them out! Erik’s entire mission is showing how easy and affordable it is to make your own adaptive equipment at home. 🙌🏼

Adaptive equipment is everywhere you look! As OT’s we can use adaptive equipment to improve safety, maximize independence, support caregivers, prevent falls and reduce pain! While no equipment is one size fits all, having a basic awareness of what’s available will significantly improve your ability to maximize independence and safety!
Side note: As a child of the 90’s, this video brings me so much joy. I hope John Stamos is proud. 😍
