Nobody tells you in med school that the skills you learn as a doctor are valuable far beyond the hospital.
Why would they? We are training to be doctors.
So the idea is that you stay a doctor for the rest of your life.
But you are allowed to change, grow and evolve. And your skills are valuable.
Not just clinical knowledge - but things like:
- Communicating complex information clearly
- Making high-stakes decisions under pressure
- Leading multidisciplinary teams
- Problem-solving quickly with limited information
- Managing risk and uncertainty
- Building trust with people in difficult moments
These are skills companies, startups, consulting firms, health tech, pharma and many other industries actively look for.
Yet we believe there’s only one path.
If you’re feeling burnt out or stuck, it might not be medicine you hate - it might just be the **lack of options we’re shown❤️🩹**
Have you ever thought about using your medical degree outside the hospital?
Clinical vs Academic Medicine, two different paths in the same profession.
🔹 Clinical Medicine focuses primarily on direct patient care in hospitals, clinics or private practice. The main role is diagnosing, treating, and managing patients on a daily basis.
🔹 Academic Medicine combines patient care with teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities, usually within university-affiliated hospitals.
Both career paths have their own pros and challenges:
✔️ Clinical Medicine
• Greater focus on patient interaction
• Potentially higher income in private practice
• Hands-on clinical decision making
✔️ Academic Medicine
• Opportunity to teach and mentor future doctors
• Involvement in research and innovation
• Exposure to complex cases and multidisciplinary collaboration
⚠️ Challenges can include:
• Longer hours and pressure in clinical practice
• Lower compensation and promotion complexity in academia
At the end of the day, both paths contribute immensely to healthcare and patient outcomes. The right choice depends on your interests, priorities, and career goals.

Medicine can be meaningful.
It can be noble.
It can change lives.
But it is also a life architecture decision, not just a career choice.
We talk a lot about:
Prestige, stability, income.
We don’t talk as openly about:
-six-figure debt
-delayed earnings
-training during your most formative adult years
-structuring your life around call schedules
-the impact on relationships and family planning
None of this means “don’t do it.”
It means: don’t do it blindly.
Wanting to heal people is beautiful.
So is wanting financial security, time freedom, and life out the hospital.
Two things can be true:
Medicine is meaningful.
And it is demanding in ways people don’t always say out loud.

If you want to maximise your exposure to every opportunity available to build a portfolio career as a medical student, keep reading…
My name is Omar and I’m a final year medic at Kings College London.
I remember feeling disillusioned in my second year of medical school - placement was not interesting and the future career prospects scared me. But instead of sitting around and letting the system run its course, I decided to do something about it.
I started exploring alternative careers in consulting, investment banking, private equity and pharma. I did a summer internship in investment banking at Lazard - a top 10 investment bank globally. I did a Masters in Global Health Policy at the LSE to explore public health careers. I even looked into relocating as a medic and sat the USMLE Step 1 (and I’m currently preparing for medical electives at world class institutions in the US). I’m sharing everything I’ve learned along the way as well as the journey going forward right here on this page - my reflections on everything from careers to personal branding, health and fitness to travel.
If this sounds like you, follow along, I have loads more coming 🚀

Early in medical school I thought success meant doing everything.
More resources.✔️
More studying.✔️
More hours.✔️
But the students who actually thrive in medicine don’t study the most.
They study the smartest.
After going through medical school, residency, and now cardiology fellowship, here are the things I would focus on if I had to start again:
1️⃣Build a study system early
2️⃣Prioritize active learning over passive studying.
3️⃣Protect time outside medicine.🏃♂️
Because success in medicine isn’t about burning yourself out.
It’s about creating a system that lets you improve every single week.✨
And still have a life outside the hospital.
If you’re early in your journey…
Learning this now can save you years of frustration.
