Salsa as we know it took shape in New York City during the 1960s and ’70s, but its roots go back generations. The music carries African and Afro Caribbean influences, with sounds like son cubano and rumba becoming important foundations along with mambo, guaracha, cha cha chá, jazz and other Caribbean sounds. New York is where all of this really started coming together. Puerto Rican, Cuban and other Latin musicians were shaping the city’s music scene, and eventually salsa became the name connected to this mixture of rhythms and sounds. Puerto Rico would also become one of salsa’s biggest centers, while the genre continued growing across places like Venezuela and Colombia before reaching even bigger audiences around the world. And I think that’s what makes salsa history so interesting. The music we know today carries pieces of different cultures, sounds and generations that all helped shape what salsa became. Now the important question… who’s on your Mount Rushmore of salsa?

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month but let’s spend a little while getting Smarter in Seconds about Latino Identity with @blactina, @lilyjoywinder, and @asif.tv! 🌎Written by @asif.tv! In the US, Hispanic describes people who come from a primarily Spanish-speaking country. The term was popularized in the 1970s when Mexican American organizations including @maldefian pushed for a distinct ethnic category in the US census. Both “Hispanic” and “Latino” are umbrella terms that refer to broad regions, and countless cultures, communities, ethnicities, races, and more. Though many people identify more with their nationalities than these terms. Many of the over 50 million Indigenous people in these regions identify with their own communities rather than the language and labels oppressors forced onto them. And of the over 130 million people of African descent in Latin America, many self identify as Afro Latino or Afro Caribbean. Despite Haiti’s rebellion sparking the revolutions across Latin America, racism, colorism, and the legacy of enslavement have resulted in ongoing hatred against these core communities. We want to help explain the context and history of these terms and identities, but remember that no one should be forced to identify with them or be excluded because of bias! Extra credit 📝 Did you learn anything new from this deeper dive into Latino identity? Did you see our first episode of Smarter in Seconds

We were Africans before we became anything else. Malcolm X understood that the story of Black people could not begin with slavery. It had to begin with Africa. He often pondered the historical violence that separated Africans from their homeland people taken by force, stripped of names, languages, cultures and histories, and scattered across the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and elsewhere. The tragedy was not only that Africans were enslaved. It was that generations were deliberately disconnected from the knowledge of where they came from. Yet before the labels Black American, Afro Caribbean, African American, Jamaican, Brazilian, Haitian we were African. Malcolm X’s search for identity was therefore also a search for memory: to know yourself is to know the history that existed before the chains. Africa was not the beginning of our oppression. It was the beginning of us. #panafrican #africanhistory #africa #africanheritage #reels
