One of the most visually striking moments in Aladdin is when the Genie towers behind Aladdin during a vibrant transformation scene filled with color, motion, and magical effects. On screen, the Genie feels enormous and supernatural, reacting instantly and moving with fluid energy that drives the scene forward. But the performance didn’t start as pure animation. Will Smith first acted out the Genie’s movements on a motion-capture stage while performing alongside the actor playing Aladdin. Wearing a capture suit, his timing, expressions, and gestures were recorded so the character could still feel like a real performance. Visual effects artists then built the Genie digitally around that performance.
