How many people did it take to make you? 🎧
Every generation back doubles your ancestors. 33 generations (~1,000 years) gives 8.6 billion places in your family tree, more than everyone alive today… but only ~300 million people lived then.
So the same people appear again and again, and a few thousand years back, we all share ancestors.
(Sources: Fenner 2005 · HYDE 3.1 · Rohde et al. 2004, Nature)
You have 8,589,934,592 ancestors from just 1,000 years ago.
That’s more people than are alive today. So how is that possible?
Back then there were only ~300 million people on Earth. The same people show up in your family tree again and again, until every branch folds back into one.
Go back a few thousand years, and we’re all related. 🧬

I get asked this a lot: “Why does my Ancestry test say I’m 20% Irish, but my ancient DNA shows Vikings and Romans?”
They’re not wrong, just measuring two totally different things.
Modern DNA tests look at how your genome compares to people alive today.
Ancient DNA compares you to actual archaeological remains…people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Both are true. They just tell different parts of the same story:
one about your living roots,
and one about your ancestral echoes through time.
Which one would you rather explore? The family you could meet, or the ancestors you’ll never know? #DNAExplained #AncientDNA #GenealogyTok #AncestryResults #ancestry
Researching Italian ancestors? 🇮🇹🔎
One of the most useful things you can do is work out the exact town or commune your ancestor came from.
Italian records are often organised locally, so knowing the place can make a huge difference to your search.
A good place to start is Portale Antenati, which has digitised civil birth, marriage and death records from across Italy. FamilySearch is also really useful for Italian civil and church records, although coverage varies by area.
If you’re starting from a record in another country, look closely for a birthplace, town name, parents’ names or other relatives who might help you narrow the location down.
Sometimes finding the place is the clue that unlocks the whole branch. 🌳
Save this for your Italian family-history research.

What happens when you ask ChatGPT to build your entire family tree and find relatives you didn’t even know existed?
I tried this and ChatGPT found family members I didn’t even know I was related to.
Here’s how:
Prompt 1:
“I want to build my full family tree, so ask me everything you need to know: my full name, where my family is from, and every relative I can remember.”
ChatGPT maps out everything you know into a clean starting tree.
Prompt 2:
“Now based on my last name and where my family came from, tell me the origins of my family line and how far back you can trace it.”
ChatGPT pulls the entire history behind your family name.
Prompt 3 (the trick):
“Using everything you know about me, go search public records, ancestry databases, and obituaries to find relatives connected to my family I don’t already have.”
ChatGPT opens its own browser, digs through every public record it can find, and comes back with relatives you never knew existed.
Bonus prompt:
“Now build me the full visual family tree with everyone you found and how we’re all connected.”
ChatGPT creates an animation and lays out your entire family tree for you.
