My heart is so full. My good friend lives a few hours away and when her and her daughter came to visit I decided that she was old enough to meet a few of the gentlest members of our animal family. I knew they wouldn’t harm her, but I never imagined they would be so receptive to this tiny human. - Disclaimer: I’ve only ever let the animals meet children less than a handful of times and always older children. This little girl was raised by an animal-centric mom and I knew she had great animal manners. I do not display my animals to the public and the only visitors we have are people I know personally and trust. Our animals are all very socialized with people since they cannot be released into the wild. Please do not approach wild animals as they deserve their space. ♥️

JANE GOODALL RIP - Our Planet has lost one of the Greatest Conservationists of all Times! Our World is a Better Place because of her! Repost from the amazing @animalheroesworld ... It’s a tough day for all animal enthusiasts as Jane Goodall took her last breath today. She lived her life to make sure our animal family could have a life of quality. When she started out, she was resisted, doubted, and even ridiculed for entering a male-dominated field. But she had no ego to protect — she had animals to protect. And perhaps that is why she was soon accepted and loved by the wildlife she dedicated her life to. They feel. They know. As she enters heaven now, her work has only just begun. It is up to all of us to ensure that every living creature on this Earth receives the respect and recognition they deserve — to be seen as sentient beings, no matter what.

This week we are celebrating pups Tofu and Tempeh turning two years old! 🥹 Life with these girls has been… a lot. The first year or so, we weren’t sure we could do it. True to Great Pyrenees form, they tested every boundary and had us making constant adjustments to our (relatively new and very expensive!) fencing over 14 acres of land. But at some point this year, there was thankfully a mellowing that has made life with them SO much easier. (Plus SpotOn collars, which have been a lifesaver.) Tofu and Tempeh are the happiest, floofiest, silliest girls. They love their animal family so much, and spend their time watching over everyone, in addition to lots of lounging and log carrying. 😂 They are beyond delighted to see the humans here and always give their friends the warmest welcomes. They are gentle, super smart, giant babies, and thankfully the escapism has stopped (though we’re still always on alert and the property damage is still in full force!). 😅 Happy birthday, polar bears. You have put us through way too much but now we can’t imagine sanctuary life without you. 🥳 *** *** *** #happycompromisefarm #greatpyrenees #lgds #adoptdontshop #interspeciesfriendship
Our Zoo lost a longtime member of our animal family this week: our beloved 22-year-old jaguar, Masaya. Masaya lived most of her life with us, making her an extra special resident for our Zoo staff and volunteers—and much of our community. “Masaya was an icon of the Rainforest loop for a long time,” said Sidnee Helton, Curator of Animals. “The impact one jaguar has had on so many different people is felt through those who worked directly with her, guests who spotted her in the tunnels for the first time, and regular visitors who made up her fan base.” At 22, Masaya well surpassed the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) life expectancy for jaguars, which is 18.8 years old. And while older age alone isn’t a disease, it often invites a number of age-related, degenerative health issues. Masaya developed kidney disease during her geriatric years which there is, unfortunately, no known cure. Still, our animal care team carefully monitored Masaya to ensure she was comfortable and provided hydration to manage her symptoms. This week, Masaya showed signs of increasing underlying medical issues—she experienced limited mobility and was far less responsive to keepers. An exam found that we had exhausted any additional reasonable efforts to alleviate her condition. The compassionate decision was made to euthanize Masaya to prevent future suffering. Her necropsy showed abnormalities found within her liver, adrenal glands, kidneys and gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts. Our veterinary team is submitting her tissues for histopathology, or the microscopic examination of the cells of organs, which will provide us with more information. As an ambassador for her species, Masaya paved the way for future generations of jaguars through her participation in the AZA Species Survival Plan program. Her legacy is carried on by her important contributions to a healthy, safeguarded population of jaguars in AZA-accredited organizations. This is a big loss for our Zoo—please keep our Rainforest Revealed keepers in your thoughts during this difficult time. 🔗To read more about Masaya, visit our blog. Link is in our bio.
