It’s a weird experience sitting doing paperwork while bones are being identified and sorted into separate bags. Packed up into plastic boxes to go into storage. I’ve heard people talk about the finality of death how all that’s left is the body. Yet in some way it feels like the body because a new living thing after. I’ve never dealt in fleshy remains only skeletons. But the bones still feel alive. They still have a story to tell. I’ve been thinking recently about when the archaeologist becomes the archaeology. Even sitting beside them I am part of their story. Not just of the bones but the people they are. They are also part of me and part of my story. Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the MOVE bombing in Philadelphia (City of Brotherly Love). Police dropped a bomb from a helicopter onto a residential house killed 11 people including 5 children aged 7-14. Not all remains were returned to their families and instead were kept in storage and forgotten. ANCIENT EGPYT WAS A BLACK AFRICAN CIVILISATION In a bid to present our ancestors as primitive people, European anthropologists and historians would discount the contributions of Africans towards civilisation. Ancient Egyptian civilisation is a case in point. Its achievements were often presented as the products of a White culture - for example, by the likes of French Egyptologist Gaston Camille Charles Maspero (1846-1916). More recently, British writer Graham Hancock even suggested that Egyptian civilisation was (at the time) impossible to achieve without assistance from an advanced race - be it alien or some lost civilisation.
