Antwone Fisher’s life began with heartbreak. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1959, his father was killed before he was born. His mother was in prison and couldn’t raise him, so baby Antwone was placed in foster care—unwanted, and left to grow up without a family.
At 17, after high school, Antwone was emancipated from foster care and found himself homeless on the streets of Cleveland. But then came a turning point: the U.S. Navy.
The Navy gave him discipline, structure, and a chance to rebuild. He carried deep pain, but he channeled it into hard work and service, earning respect over 11 years.
After leaving the Navy, Antwone worked as a federal corrections officer and later a security guard at Sony Pictures Studios. On his breaks, he began writing his story. What started as painful memories became powerful words.
📖 In 2001, his memoir Finding Fish became a bestseller. Soon after, it was adapted into the film Antwone Fisher—directed and starring Denzel Washington.
Even more remarkable, Antwone reunited with family he never knew, including meeting his mother for the very first time.
Today, he is an acclaimed author, screenwriter, director, and inspirational speaker.
With more than 390,000 children in foster care in America, his journey is a powerful reminder: every child deserves love, safety, and a family to call their own. ❤️
