Building an off-grid home isnāt just about putting up wallsāitās about doing everything the right way from the very beginning. š·š¼āāļøš·š¾āāļøš”
Today Richard is installing our ground rod, an important part of our electrical system that helps protect our home, solar equipment, and appliances by safely directing excess electricity into the ground.
Living off-grid full-time in the Arizona desert definitely comes with its challenges. That hard caliche soil is no joke! š
We rented a machine from Home Depot, and it made driving the ground rod into the earth so much quicker.
Every project teaches us something new, and every step brings us closer to finishing the off-grid luxury home weāre building ourselves. Itās been a lot of hard work, but seeing our dream come to life is worth every bit of it.
Have you ever seen a ground rod installed before? Let me know in the comments! ā”š” #OffGridLiving #SolarPower #HomeBuilding #ArizonaLiving #OffGridHome

I guess it is literally āThe New Miamiā
Itās getting harder every day to tell Tempe and Miami apart.
Palm trees, waterfront views, warm evenings, colorful sunsets, and an energy that keeps the city alive long after the sun goes down. No, there isnāt an ocean, but Tempe has a way of making you forget youāre in the middle of the Arizona desert.
Every visit seems to prove the joke a little more. The scenery, the atmosphere, and the sunsets make it one of the most underrated places in Arizona.
Maybe āthe new Miamiā isnāt such a crazy nickname after all.

When the opportunity came up to buy my grandparentsā 1974 ranch house in Mesa, AZ, it took me months to finally get on board.
It wasnāt my dream house.
It had a giant lawn.
And even though Iād grown up on flood irrigated properties, Iād never been the one in charge of running the system for myself before š«£
To be honest, a new build sounded easier . . . But I had recently jumped head first into sustainable living choicesāminimalism, zero waste, self-reliance, and moreāand the more I learned, the more I realized that flood irrigation was actually the cheat code for building a regenerative food forest in the Arizona desert.
Nearly a decade later, I now earn a living teaching other Arizonans about the benefits of this system š„¹ and guiding home buyers through the process of finding their perfect home to build their *own* food forests ā¤ļø

Rattlesnakes donāt want to bite you. Theyāre generally more afraid of you than you are of them, and thankfully, very few people die from rattlesnake bites in the U.S. each yearālargely because modern medical treatment and antivenom are available.
But when youāre 8 miles into the Arizona desert with no cell service, getting that treatment quickly becomes the real concern.
Donāt fear rattlesnakes. Respect them, give them space, and respect how quickly the situation changes when help isnāt close. š

The Beautiful Wild Salt River Horses of Arizona š“šµ
Most horses graze on open fields.
But these wild horses in the Arizona desert do something incredible.
They dive their heads completely underwater and hold their breath for minutes at a time.
These are the Salt River horses.
In the extreme heat of the Sonoran Desert, where grass dries up, they āsnorkelā to the river bottom to eat nutrient-rich eelgrass. This behavior is not instinct ā itās a learned culture passed down through generations. Foals watch their mothers and learn how to do it.
By eating aquatic plants, they get both food and hydration, allowing them to survive in a place where most horses couldnāt.
Descendants of horses brought by Spanish explorers centuries ago, these are the only horses on Earth that live like this.

What if some of the strangest ādragonā stories from the American West werenāt just stories?
In 1882, a Southern Pacific train crew and passengers reportedly encountered a 30-foot flying serpent in the Arizona desertāand claimed it attacked the train after its tail was clipped.
Could it have been a misidentified animal, a sensational newspaper story, or something genuinely unexplained?
And then thereās the timing: Pteranodon had only recently been discovered in North America.
So where do you land?
Old West tall tale⦠or a sighting of something we still donāt understand? šš
