Ash Trees are so incredible, they are one of the British isles might giants but sadly they are under attack by a horrible disease called Ash Die Back.
There is a glimmer of hope though, as a small percentage will hopefully show resistance which should mean their young sapling should hold resistance too.
Throughout history Ash has not only made spears due to its straight grain, but it has kept us warm and healed us.
It’s bark treated fevers, it’s leaves treated urinary track infections, to name just a few.

The ash tree has held the world for thousands of years: at least in the stories we have told about it.
In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil was an immense ash tree whose roots and branches connected the different worlds of the cosmos. Gods travelled through it, creatures lived among it, and its roots reached into the deepest parts of existence.
And the ash wasn’t only sacred in mythology. Across Britain and Ireland, ash has long been woven into human life - from tools and weapons to folklore and place names.
Today, our native ash faces a very different story.
Ash dieback is threatening one of the most important trees in our landscape, with the potential to transform the woodlands and hedgerows it has shaped for generations.
A tree that was once imagined to hold the whole world is now one we are struggling to hold on to.

🌿 T H E R O W A N T R E E 🌿
With its healing properties and association with magic, the Rowan tree has its roots deep in the heart of European culture and folklore.
In mythology it is said that the Earth dragon sleeps amongst the roots of the Rowan tree, awakening with the land at the spring equinox (when the tree is in bloom) and returning to its roots during the autumn equinox, when the land is preparing for its long winter sleep and berries grace the hedgerows.
The Rowan is nicknamed the Mountain Ash, due to its leaves looking similar to that of the Ash tree, and is considered its feminine equivalent. In Scandinavian culture the first woman was born from Rowan and the first man from Ash.
The Druids of old used smoke from Rowan fires to call up spirit guides and connect to the Otherworld in deep meditations and divinations. The Rowan was another sacred tree of the Druids, and mixed Oak and Rowan groves were usually important places of worship and meditation. It is said wherever druidic remains are found so also is the Rowan tree.
Wistmans Wood is a beautiful example of a mixed Oak and Rowan woodland which once covered much of Dartmoor. It is said that Druids would conduct rituals beneath the trees, carving spirals and circular shapes into the lichen-clad rocks.
Scottish Highlanders recognized and utilized the protective qualities of Rowan by making the cross-beams of chimneys from its wood, and on Equinox and Solstices rowan sticks were laid across the lintels.
Weary travellers were also said to carry Rowan sticks on nights where the veil was thinnest to protect themselves from malicious or malevolent spirits or Fae.
The Rowan tree also has some fantastic herbal qualities, and can even be used in recipes such as Rowan berry jelly!
The berries of the Rowan tree can be prepared in decoction as a gargle for sore throats and inflamed tonsils, and has been used since ancient times as a strong antibiotic.

Back down to Gothenburg for another day of tree work 🌳
This time we were pruning an ash growing on a rocky cliff, removing a few larger dead branches.
We also tried cauterising the pruning cuts, inspired by @elemental_tree_network. Curious to see how the tree responds over time. Plenty left to learn.
Managed to stop by @jonsonstradservice too. Always nice to catch up and talk trees with people who enjoy the work as much as you do 🤝
And offcourse a the lunch was a great pizza at @grepp.se (one of swedens larger climbing gyms) They do also deliver a fantastic pizza, coffee and lovley service!
