I’ve sang ‘you are my sunshine’ to Harry since he was a baby. He knows it by heart and when I ask him to finish the sentence ‘you make Mummy very…’ he always replies with ‘proud’. I won’t ever know how much he fully understands but what I do know is that the words we repeat to our children can become their internal narrative for better or worse. I want my boys to always know that they are loved and precious to me, whether that’s through a song or a phrase. Repeating music and tunes are very common among children with echolalia and nonverbal children. But it still surprises me every time! 😍 * Nonverbal Autism refers to the ability to communicate not just the ability to talk. Talking is just the act of uttering words, where communication is the intentional form of words to convey a message to someone, clear enough for them to understand what they actually mean. Nonverbal autism can be no words or minimal words. It’s about if she can structure a sentence clearly for someone to understand. For example, every time Mikko says the word “Apple” does not always mean the same thing, there is no context to why she is saying apple. Some times she wants an apple, sometimes she just wants to show me an apple, sometimes she just wants to say that she saw a car that was the same color as an apple.
