Some airline industry groups are pushing to reduce the size of the flight crew on large aircraft to a single pilot, claiming that advances in avionic technology make a second pilot unnecessary. Instead, in some cases, they would place a second pilot in a remote ground location.
Why this is wrong: This approach jeopardizes passengers and people on the ground. Research shows that one person can’t fly a commercial airliner safely, even with the latest advances in navigation, communications, and weather monitoring.
A decade-plus of research by the FAA and NASA shows that the safety risks and challenges associated with single-pilot operations far outweigh any potential benefits.
Two pilots are a necessary redundancy to manage the flight deck and protect against the potential incapacitation of one pilot.
What’s really going on: Those pushing for single-pilot operations are really trying to save money by cutting operational costs, and are willing to risk the safety of passengers, crew, cargo, and people on the ground below.
Air travel is the safest mode of transportation in the U.S. Let’s keep it that way.
