Two more babies heading to Morph Market. One is a Caramel Zebra Jag het Axanthic, and one is a Caramel Zebra her Axanthic with a lot of the axanthism showing through. Tons of spunk in these little guys!
Blue Mediterranean tree frog (Hyla meridionalis). As a reminder, a genetic aberration called axanthism, which prevents the synthesis of yellow pigments, is responsible for this frog's blue color. Note this particular pattern with remaining green spots. Dordogne (24), France. © Frank Deschandol

So… I’ve learned something new, or rather came to a greater understanding of the roots of a word and the way I’ve always used it. Axanthic (from A-Xan-thic/ism, pr. Aye-zan-thic) : Axanthism is a mutation that interferes with an animal’s ability to produce yellow pigment.(Herpetology) Coloured without normal yellow or red pigments, resulting in shades of grey. Axanthics are a recessive mutation that produces a snake that is varying shades of grey, black So after listening to some corn snake morph guide videos and podcasts with @sarahssnakeshop referring to Anerythrism; as well as previously listening to some of Kevin Rhodes (hognose1) podcasts, I’ve always noticed two pronunciations for axanthic/axanthism. I had always previously said “Axe-zan-thic” as opposed to “Aye-zan-thic”. Hearing Sarah Mohr break down the phonetics and meaning of parts the word: “A (without/lacking)- xanthin (yellow pigment) -ic/ism (of or pertaining to) - I’ve come to think that the pronunciation I’ve always used (while still acceptable in the industry/community), may not be the best choice in pronunciation. I’m gonna try training myself to say the other, because I’ve always been a bit of a vocabulary and linguistics nerd (at least with roots of word meanings in English) and the pronunciation as Aye-zan-thic just makes more sense to me once it’s broke down, and especially when compared to the pronunciation of other herpetological words like Amelanistic/Amelanism or Anerythristic/Anerythrism; Again with the “A” part of the word meaning lack in or of. I think I honestly just liked the way it sounded better starting with that “axe” sound. 😅 Also, as you can probably surmise, I’ve had my eye on some corn snakes as well recently. Never stop educating yourself and learning, folks. And be open to changing your preconceived perspective and notions. #reptileroom #snakerack #vivarium #terrarium #westernhognose #westernhognosesnakes #westernhognosesnakesofinstagram #hognose #plainshognosesnake #plainshognose #hognosesnake #hognosebreeder #heterodonnasicus #snakebreeder #reptilebreeder #reptilebusiness #snakebusiness #herptiles #herpetology #herpetoculture #colubrid #colubrids
What would YOU rather find? 🤔🪵🦗 For those who are curious, petrified wood is fossilized wood that had its wood cells replaced with minerals such as silica and quartz, etc. It’s actually a fossil and takes a long time to form, ranging from hundred thousands to millions of years! 🪵✨ The blue-morph (axanthic) katydid isn’t a new species but it’s abnormally blue due to a loss or mutation in the pigmentation. This is an example of axanthism, although there is not much documentation of insects with axanthism. 🦗💙✨ #Axanthism #Katydid #PetrifiedWood #Petrified #Wood #WouldYouRather #YouChoose #Rare #Axanthic #Insect
After CBC reported a rare blue frog in Chance Harbour, New Brunswick, NBM Curator Dr. Greg Jongsma looked more closely at axanthism: a pigment condition that removes yellow, making frogs appear blue. That search led to a surprise: during earlier fieldwork in Africa, he had documented similar frogs that were never formally reported. The result? A new study confirming the first blue (axanthic) African reed frogs and updating the global list of axanthic amphibians, increasing known records by nearly 50%. It's a reminder that public curiosity can spark research, and expand what we know about the natural world.
Check out this rare blue common green frog from a few years back! This species is usually green (hence the name green frog), but in this case it has a genetic mutation known as axanthism. Pretty neat! #fyp #frog #animals #nature #rare #wildlife
The Axanthic gene is a mutation that interferes with an animal’s ability to produce xanthophores (yellow pigment). So why does this female Axanthic have a yellow coloration underneath her “Axanthic coat”? Well axanthism effects the topmost layer of the chromatophore. The parents to this Axanthic animal are yellow base hets and you can clearly see the influence of yellow on her. It is amazing to see the yellow trying to push out and show itself on an animal that in theory isn’t supposed to display yellow in its phenotype. Want to learn more? Head over to our YouTube channel and watch out latest video where we go into detail on this amazing mutation! #crestedgecko #crestedgeckos #reptiles #animals
a BLUE green tree frog! 🙌🏻💙🐸 I guess this guy took the saying “it’s not easy being green” a little too literally… this rare coloring results from the absence of cells that contain yellow pigments, (a mutation called axanthism) either due to genetic or environmental reasons. basically, without yellow, green is blue! #natureisCOOL #bluegreentreefrog #axanthicfrog #axanthism
Casper Yellowbelly Watersnakes. These killer holdbacks exemplify what this Rad combo of axanthism and anerytherism can do. Yellow Bellied Watersnakes. Casper morph and normal. Both impressive animals. The Caspers exhibit both anerytherism and axanthism. Having grey and white tones and a white belly. this is not a recessive trait situation. What will two Caspers bred together produce? Still a lot of learning with this project. Limited Caspers and beautiful normals looking for new zip codes.
