It took me five years to open up my heart and home to a new little girl. Anyone who knows me or has followed me for some time, knows that I was head over heels for my dog, Shanti. She was everything to me.
After I put her down because of cancer, I couldn’t bear to bring another dog into my home. However, time heals and the time has come to bring another little girl into my life. Meet Bala! While she looks like a $3000 designer dog, I adopted her for $25 at @bfas_la
Bala’s story? She was found roaming the streets somewhere in the San Fernando Valley. She was dropped off at West Valley Animal Shelter and someone from BFAS happened to be there that day, picking up some other dogs and when they saw her, they brought her to their sanctuary in West LA. I should mention BFAS is the largest no kill sanctuary in the US.
All it took was five minutes after @luismstrohmeier and I met this little nugget. He literally looked at me and said, “we have to take her.”
So we did! And she has already brought so much joy into our lives.
In case you’re wondering why we named her Bala, I thought it would be nice to stick with another Sanskrit name in honor of Shanti. As most of you probably know, Shanti means peace. In Sanskrit, Bala means “the little one” or “the child like one,” and all I can say is the name is perfect for her. She’s super spirited and playful, and even as she ages, I know her young spirit will continue to shine thru.

I should mention, having a dog or cat around, is really good for your mental health.

My sweet baby Charlie (Char-Char, Charlie the one-eyed-wondered cat) crossed the rainbow bridge and became an angel on the morning of Monday the 14th. Although I am devastated, I am comforted by knowing how many people (and other animals!) truly loved her. Char-Char got to travel cross country several times, flew in a Cessna piloted by her daddy, played in snow in the mountains, lounged by the pool in Florida, and never met a shoulder or a lap she did not want to sit on 😆
I have no doubt she is now cuddling with Roxy in heaven.

We found Lisa in a high-kill shelter in Texas. She had been seized by Animal Control from a serious hoarding case where many dogs were suffering neglect. We saw sweet Lisa and immediately tagged her. She will be serving her quarantine in Texas before she catches her Freedom Ride to New Jersey next month!
