“Why not speak up sooner?” I talked this through with my therapist extensively….Why did I feel the need to stay quiet? Why didn’t I share the behaviors and situations I knew were wrong? Why? First she helped me understand how it all made sense; protecting through silence. Because of love and also because I wanted to make things work. So in a situation like that you choose to turn a “blind eye” to the bad in order to protect yourself from the full weight of it and be able to stay. Two, because subconsciously I knew that if I began to talk, and I let others in, there would be questions, and accountability, and check ins, and potentially the push to change things. And I wasn’t ready for that. I wasn’t ready to look at the reality of what was going on. I was protecting myself through silence also…So I could stay in the fantasy life I’d created and hold on a little longer. But as with all fantasies, eventually the façade cracks under the weight of truth; you can only close your eyes to reality for so long. And when it all crashes down, it comes down hard. One of the most difficult things I’m dealing with now that my body feels safer to explore the past is all the moments, experiences, and situations that I haven’t given room to be angry over. To process. To grieve. The crushing weight of each fresh “new” memory is heavy. But I know the best and most honoring thing I can do right now is bear witness to my own lived experience and walk through the pain to heal rather than suppress it any longer. It’s hard, but is worth it.
