For those asking about what Barn Hunt is ❤️🫡

We took Nalu to an intro Barn Hunt class today and she had SO much fun. Barn Hunt is a sport designed around the skills dogs historically used to hunt rodents. Here’s the basic idea: Dogs search a maze of straw/hay bales for rats safely housed in aerated tubes, while also navigating a tunnel and climbing the bales. At the Novice level, a dog has to complete a tunnel, climb, and correctly find one live rat. Three qualifying scores earn the Novice title, and the challenges increase from there. By the time you reach Master, there are eight tubes on the course and anywhere from one to five contain rats, so the handler doesn’t even know how many rats the dog needs to find. 😂 The rats aren’t being hunted or harmed. They’re considered working partners in the sport and are kept in specially designed, safe tubes with their welfare treated as a priority. Nalu may be training for one job, but I’m really enjoying finding ways to let her use all the other instincts and skills that make her a dog, too. Yes, it’s early. Yes, he’s small. Starting Wilder in barn hunt is not about winning titles quickly or leveling up too fast. I want to show him the game and create a lot of excitement — when you find this rat all kinds of fun things happen! Before Wilder arrived, I made a list of things I want to work on while he’s really little. I am much more concerned about how he feels about things than a bunch of specific behaviors, and I want barn hunt to be a really fun, really rewarding experience. If you’re wondering about what we’re doing at this point as an intro for tiny baby dogs: — building much excitement for the rat in a cage — after this week moving on from rat in a cage to rat in a tube — pulling him away before he disengages himself — at this point, we’ll be doing one find — holding him back to build excitement and then revving him up on the tube once he finds it I’m so excited to get to play our favorite game with Wilder and I can’t wait to do more! In Novice competitions there are three plastic tubes hidden in a straw barn: >one tube with rat bedding (a decoy scent) >one with a real, humanely sourced dead rat >one empty tube Your dog has two minutes to use their nose to identify the tube with the rat in it. They must also complete a tunnel and climb on top of the bales. If you complete all the elements within the two-minute time limit, you pass. Morty tried barn hunt for the first time! Since he loves sniffing out treats at home, I thought he’d enjoy this too and he LOVED it. He picked it up quickly, ran through tunnels, climbed hay bales, and stayed focused the whole time. Also, he had no accidents in the arena (which would’ve meant instant disqualification 😅). And yes, the rats are well taken care of and safe inside sturdy protective tubes!
