Happy anniversary to Batman, released on June 23, 1989. Prince's eleventh studio album, "Batman," was the soundtrack to the movie.

In 1989, Prince was brought on to create the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s Batman, a project that let him fully showcase his multi-instrumental talent. On songs like “Batdance” and “Partyman,” he played nearly every instrument himself, from guitar and keyboards to bass and drums, layering funk, rock, and pop into a sound that was distinctly his. While Danny Elfman’s orchestral score set the dark, gothic tone of the film, Prince’s work gave the project a modern, playful edge that resonated beyond the movie. The soundtrack went on to top the charts, proving that Prince’s one-man-band approach could not only complement a blockbuster but also stand as a successful album in its own right.

June 6th, 1989 "Batdance" by PRINCE was released as the first single from The Batman soundtrack 2 weeks ahead of the films release. It ended up being his 4th #1 single at the time (When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, & Kiss.)
Decades before super hero films were the norm, Batman had tremendous hype in front of it and with PRINCE announced as doing the entire soundtrack, it was one of the most anticipated albums of 1989.
"Batdance" was released to radio on June 1st, 1989 and at the time was one of most added songs to radio, being played on all formats. Not only did "Batdance" hit #1 on the US Billboard Pop Charts, it was #1 on the Black Charts (now known as the R & B Charts), along with the Billboard Dance Charts & Club Play.
The b-side was "200 Balloons" and was recorded in Febuarary of 1989. "Balloons" was supposed to be used in the film originally for The Jokers parade in the film, replaced by "Trust" also on the films soundtrack. "Baby, I'm A Star" was used before then and started a conversation between director Tim Burton & Jack Nicholson to see if they could get Prince to do the entire soundtrack.
PRINCE obviously was game, with the 1960's Batman Theme being the firat song PRINCE ever learned how to play, even tho to do the films soundtrack, PRINCE signed away his publishing rights to Warner Bros., a move that anyone who followed PRINCE's career would be surprised by. To the batmobile we go.
