1. I kind of set up my small interior design business by accident. I didn’t even have the confidence to enroll in my course at first (thank you, Mr. P, for the push!). And when I finished it, I just thought, ‘let’s see how this goes!’ 2. I used to compare my work to others (who am I kidding? I still do!) I can’t help compare how effortless others make it look and struggle with imposter syndrome ALL THE TIME! 🫣 3. I wish more people were open about how hard and stressful this industry can be behind the glitz & glam. It’s not all mood boards and pretty spaces. It’s problem solving, logistics, budgets, and a whole lot of car lunches! 🥗 4. I used to think saying ‘no’ or turning down projects meant missing opportunities. But that’s not the case at all. I’ve learned to recognize when another designer might be a better fit for a client and will wholeheartedly refer them. It also makes room for the right opportunities to come my way! 5. I have passed up my dream client and project 🫣 not because I wanted to, but because I had completely burnt myself out in my first year. That decision still haunts me, but it was the right one at the time to make & it taught me a valuable lesson about balance, which I now make sure to prioritize 🤍 6.I absolutely do NOT have a Pinterest-worthy home myself. 🏠 Even though I’ve designed and managed renovations for my clients, I’ve not had the chance for my own home. Yet. That’s a dream for the future…our forever home! 7. No one has viewed my website in two months. Not going to lie, when I checked my analytics (for the second time!) and saw zero (a big fat NADA) activity, it stung a little. But then I remembered… most of my leads come from Instagram anyway! 🤪 8. I get heart-in-mouth, shaky-hands, super bloomin’ nervous when presenting my ideas. I can’t even tell you! But that’s only because I pour so much heart into my designs! I just hope my clients love them as much as I do. The journey hasn’t been perfect, and I’m still figuring things out as I go. Alumni magazines - like holiday cards - are so often full of great news about how everyone is thriving. And as a graduate of Stanford, the accomplishments of my classmates are often pretty impressive. Like one of my classmates started Yahoo. So to read this totally authentic and humble update from a classmate was frankly delightful. He then listed what his kids were up to - all perfectly acceptable “normal” careers - instead of the massively impressive updates more typically shared. And his post was a perfect reminder to me that what we all value in our relationships is authenticity - not perfection. I like this classmate - who I don’t know but now wish I did! - far more than those who’ve shared tremendously impressive accomplishments.
