Billions of birds migrate through the US, mostly under the cover of darkness, during fall and spring. A migration monitoring program called BirdCast, brought to you by Colorado State University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, offers amazing bird migration forecast maps, including a live map and local alerts. Their data shows birds usually begin to migrate 30 to 45 minutes after sunset, with the greatest number in flight two to three hours later. In Sonoma County, expected night fliers this month include the Lincolnโ€™s Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Varied Thrush, and Ring-Necked Duck. To explore real-time analysis of nocturnal bird migration near you visit https://birdcast.info. While there, you can also learn about Lights Out campaigns and local efforts to reduce light pollution and help nocturnal fliers navigate the night sky. #sonomacounty #nightmigration #BirdCast @cornellbirds

In the newest episode of Bring Birds Back, we dive into the hidden world of migration with aeroecologist Dr. Adriaan Dokter, where weather radar becomes a tool for tracking birds in flight. Originally built for detecting storms (and even airplanes during World War II), todayโ€™s radar networks are helping scientists uncover something incredible: the massive, invisible rivers of birds moving across the continent. You wonโ€™t see them on your weather app, but theyโ€™re there. And now, we can finally measure the magnitude of it all. Listen now at BirdNote.org, or wherever you get your podcasts. Season 8 of Brings Birds Back is sponsored by @cornellbirds Bird Academy and @tetonscience. #Birds #BirdNote #BringBIrdsBack #Podcast #NewRelease #BirdCast #BirdsOfInstagram #science #nature #Wildlife #Migration #InstaBirds #ornithology #BirdNote #OptOutside #ScienceIsCool #BirdFeathers #Birdstagram #Nature #Birds_4you #InstaNature #PodcastEpisode #Birdwatching
