BLUE DRAGON!!! 😱🐉🌊 Or Blue Glaucus ( Glaucus atlanticus ) One of nature’s coolest creations showed up in front of me today in numbers washed up on a beach. Excuse me while I nerd out on this moment a bit . . . . This incredible creature, is a nudibranch, and like other sea slug species it isn’t venomous by itself, these guys feed on Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish ( blue-bottles ) and when they are feeding they can absorb the venom they carry. They then store the absorbed stinging cells for protection from predation. Because they are so teeny, very rarely getting bigger than 3cm long, the venom they absorb is not enough for someone human size like me to feel it if I was stung by just one little guy, however, these guys can be seen in a “ Blue Fleet “ which often float together in the hundreds and wash up, collaboratively the venom they carry could be harmful if stung ( also rare for humans ). Many of the ones I found, had already passed away, but I did move some to a little rockpool to give them a fighting second chance. Different to other nudibranchs, the Blue Glaucus species lives entirely in the water column, a true sailor! An air bubble is stored in their little stomachs, to keep them afloat, often they flip on their back showing their brightly coloured belly, to warn airborne predators. 🦅 These guys have been on my list for so long, when I first travelled and worked / dived after completing my marine biology degree, I have been actively searching, and of the thousands of nudibranchs ive seen, today topped it. Dragón azul 💙 Este invierno está siendo especialmente intenso y, durante la última borrasca, volvimos a ver en Gran Canaria muchos de estos nudibranquios varados en la orilla junto a otras especies pelágicas como el velero (Velella velella), el botón azul (Porpita porpita), el caracol violeta (Janthina janthina) o la carabela portuguesa (Physalia physalis), que también aparece en el vídeo. El dragón azul (Glaucus atlanticus) es una pequeña babosa marina de aguas abiertas que vive en la superficie del océano. Habita en zonas tropicales y templadas, flotando boca abajo mientras se desplaza a la deriva, arrastrado por corrientes y vientos junto a otros organismos de los que se alimenta. Como apenas puede nadar, cuando estas masas de agua llegan a la costa no es capaz de enfrentarse al oleaje ni al viento y termina varando en la arena, sin posibilidad de regresar mar adentro. Aunque es una suerte poder verlos de cerca, su presencia en la orilla supone el final de su viaje.
