if you’re still in the first draft and think your pacing might be too slow or too fast, here’s my advice as a book editor + author

I love being a book editor for cozy mystery novels, and I love an amateur sleuth character who hustles! #writingtips #writingadvice #cozymystery #bookeditor
I loved so much about teaching, but I love EVERYTHING about being a book editor. Sunday scaries? Not here. August jitters? Nothing to do with my job. Editing is my passion, and I’m so lucky to be able to do it every day. 🪩❤️ #romanceeditor #copyeditingservice #bookeditorslife #bookeditor
I’ve just been let go from my job… Hi! I’m M. Phoenix (pen name). I’m a published author and, professionally, a book editor. After working for over two years with two publishers, I’ve gone independent (for many reasons, but mostly because they wanted quantity over quality and were forcing me to incorporate AI to expedite the work). Now that I’m working as a freelance editor, I’ve decided to work with indie authors (being indie-published myself) and to provide my services at reasonable prices. If you’ve been looking for an editor, I hope you’ll give me a chance. Here’s how it works: 1. We talk about your book. 2. You send over Chapter 1 and the premise of your book. 3. I send you an editorial review, free of charge, along with an edited sample. 4. You decide whether my editing style works for you. 5. We agree upon a service (that your book needs) and the charges (aligned with your budget). DM me to discuss your book. 🩷 #indieauthor #lookingforeditor #authorsofinstagram #editor #bookstagram
My first couple of weeks as a book editor at Penguin Random House 🤍 For the first time in my career, I don’t have any books yet. When I started out as an editorial assistant at Atria, I had my manager’s books to work on, and then I acquired my own. Starting fresh at a new imprint means starting from scratch for the very first time. So these first weeks have looked a little different: updating my wish list and what my new imprint is looking for, sharing it with agents, reaching out to colleagues in the UK, scheduling lunches and coffees and zooms, cleaning up my inbox, setting up a new submissions log, reading lots and lots of submissions, and of course, getting to know my new colleagues. If you’re curious what NYC publishing actually looks like, come along for a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a romance and romantasy editor 🤍 #Bookstagram #PublishingLife #BookEditor #RomanceEditor #NYCEditor

I couldn’t catch the perfect Instagram selfie in the rain last night but that’s okay— y’all my book, OUR book is on an @amazonbooks billboard in NYC!!! 😭🙏🏾🎉🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 I was taught not to share too many happy moments publicly (it’s a culture/family thing- if you’re reading @AmericanNegra 📚 you get it 😅), but my book editor @missadenikeo told me this week to POST WITHOUT FEAR. I remember coming to this city sleeping on friends’ couches, no savings. Living check-to-check. I asked theGrio’s co-founder Dan Woolsey @dj2thew for an advance so I could pay for memoir-writing classes at @gothamwriters & he gave it to me. I went to memoir writing classes on 8th Ave *a block away* from this billboard after work weekly, hoping one day I’d write a book. 📖 Had to restart again and again. Now, 8 years later, I’m looking up at that book. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Faith is mighty. Faith creates and changes things—including justice. Don’t let anyone take it from you. (And thank you for your messages, I’m running around doing press, responding on breaks, but I see & appreciate them all! ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾) #Gratitude #americannegra #PressWeek #BookTour #thejourney #ByFaith #FaithAndWorks #thegrio #NewAuthor #thatreadingfeelingawaits 📚👏🏾
My mother raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be. She grew up in a time when very few women went to college or had the opportunity to pursue their dreams. The public may have always seen her at my father’s side, or in his shadow, but believe me, she was her own powerful force that held our household and our energies together. She was intelligent, kind and generous with her spirit and directed her laser focus on uplifting others- especially children, providing them with numerous opportunities to realize their full potential. Her lifelong dream was to become a newspaper or book editor and what she probably never realized is the immeasurable influence she had on others that helped them re-write their own stories even if she never got her own byline. Even though her edits in my life were sometimes tough and not what I wanted, they were always what I needed. I’m so grateful that she knew the difference. Happy Mother’s Day mama. Miss and love you today and every day.
It’s been a year since the book was launched by ESM Goh Chok Tong @mparader_ on 9 September 2022 at the Parliament auditorium - 32 years after the NMP scheme was first introduced into our parliamentary system on 10 September 1990. The launch was attended by over 200 guests - other than former NMPs, MPs and political watchers, we had CEOs, community leaders and changemakers from different sectors. As well as ambassadors and changemaker migrant brothers and sisters. One year on - with a spate of political scandals and disruptions in a changing world order, this intimate first anniversary celebration by @worldscientificpub at the eclectic @bookbarsg (Duxton Road) is a compelling yet clever contrast for a cosy and authentic conversation. Singapore’s political ‘Oprah’ @walidj.abdullah of Teh Tarik with Walid will moderate this casual latte chat with two former NMPs, book editor and social entrepreneur, @anthea.ong and contributor and Chair of Asia Philanthropy Circle, Laurence Lien. It’s one day after Presidential Elections on 1 Sep so Walid will most definitely get the former NMPs to discuss the relevance of elected Presidency system and what is the Parliament that we want for Singapore in the next 50 years. The book is available for purchase and signing at the event. Founded by a bookseller and a booklover, Book Bar is an independent bookshop with a focus on local/Asian writers & publishers. It hopes to create a community that loves reading as much as we do. So come join us for a honest conversation about politics and people next Saturday to celebrate the first book ever written on the NMP scheme, and support a local business that hopes to spark conversations between book lovers and foster a culture of book reading. Very limited places so please do sign up here so Book Bar knows what to expect: https://forms.office.com/r/PeLSdxUzKX
Screaming Happy Book Birthday to James Beard Award-winning Chef Alexander Smalls, decorated illustrator Frank Morrison and me, New York Times-bestselling author and decorated book editor, as our picture book, WHEN ALEXANDER GRACED THE TABLE, officially hits bookshelves today! WHEN ALEXANDER GRACED THE TABLE, is a sweet true-to-life story about the first time Alexander made a contribution to his family’s Sunday after-church porch dinner. Little Alexander comes from a family of great cooks, and Sundays are most special. He wakes up to the smell of bacon and sausage and buttermilk biscuits, and on extra special Sundays, his dad makes his famous crab gravy, hot and sweet. But the best part of Sundays come after church, when Alexander’s whole family gathers for Sunday dinner. Cooking those dinners would begin on Saturday evenings, and Alexander would always chip in—peeling eggs and shredding cheese for the mac and cheese. And always, he looked forward to the day when he could contribute something special to the Sunday table. Bonus points if he could impress his father. One day, his mom encourages Alexander to make something sweet for Sunday dinner—something special for his dad. Graham crackers are involved, as are lemons from the lemon tree out back. When it is time for that Sunday joy, Alexander sets his surprise on the table, his dad’s favorite, a Lemon Ice Box Pie. And he anxiously waits for his father to taste his creation. Will Dad like the pie? (Continued in the caption, because… writer. 😂)
