Do You Have A Bookkeeper For Your Business? Why Or Why Not?
@mattbontrager_
Yes, I’m a bookkeeper, BUT I’m a business owner first...
and as a business owner, the first thing I do every month is review my Profit & Loss statement (P&L).
I wanna know:
— Can I pay myself more?
— Am I on track to hit my revenue goals?
— Is my business becoming more profitable?
— Are there expenses I can cut to stay lean?
and I can find answers to all of that by looking at my P&L 👀
You’ll hear me say this allll the time but your financial reports aren’t just for your CPA.
They’re there to help you make better decisions all year long.
I’m thinking about sharing more BTS of how I manage my money as a business owner — from my money map to paying myself to planning for taxes.
Once you’re running a 6-figure service business, the best things to spend money on are usually the ones that buy back your time, make your numbers clearer, and stop the whole business depending on you 24/7.
And yes, I’m obviously a little biased about #5. 😂
If your bookkeeping still isn’t giving you real profit, cash flow + forecast numbers, We should probably fix that.

POV: You tell your accountant you do your own bookkeeping and expect them to be impressed 😭
Then the details start coming out…
“I thought "reconciling" was just going through the bank feed and categorize things”
“I don’t really keep receipts.”
“My personal card and business card are mixed, and connected to QuickBooks”
“I don't know why this balance from 2019 keeps coming up in my bookkeeping file”
Meanwhile the accountant is doing mental math, emotional regulation, and calculating how many follow-up emails this is going to be during tax season...
Respectfully… some of you are not doing bookkeeping.
You are creating lore 😆
Your accountant isn’t mad that you did your own books. They’re scared of what you think “books” means.
I know accountants who will not take on clients who do their own bookkeeping unless they’ve taken Chillbooks 🌴
Because DIY bookkeeping can absolutely work when you understand receipts, reconciling, GST/HST, categories, and what the CRA actually needs from you.
The chaos starts when DIY bookkeeping turns into guessing, clicking around, and hoping tax season magically sorts itself out.
That’s when it gets harder, more expensive, and way more stressful than it needs to be.
Chillbooks 🌴 teaches you how to do it properly, so whether you keep doing your own books or eventually work with an accountant, your numbers actually make sense.
A chill entrepreneur with clean books?
That’s the dream client for a CPA.

If you’re a business owner making less than $300K in gross revenue this is your friendly reminder….
Spend 15 minutes today organizing your business finances so tax season never feels stressful again.
Most business owners wait until the end of the Year to look at their numbers… and that’s exactly why they feel overwhelmed, behind, and unsure about their taxes.
But here’s the truth:
Bookkeeping doesn’t have to be scare or even take hours every week.
With the right system, you can stay on top of your finances in just 15 minutes per week.
Here’s what your Weekly Reset could look like:
• Review your business income for the week
• Categorize your expenses
• Check your weekly profit
• Track potential tax deductions
• Keep your financial reports clean and organized
That’s it.
When you track your finances weekly, you:
✔ Always know how much money your business is making
✔ Avoid messy books at tax time
✔ Capture deductions you might otherwise miss
✔ Make smarter business decisions
✔ Walk into tax season organized and confident
You don’t need complicated accounting software or expensive monthly subscriptions to stay organized.
That’s exactly why I created my DIY 15-Minute-a-Week Profit Method— a simple system I’ve used for years as a CPA to help business owners keep their finances organized and tax-ready.
Spend 15 minutes today and save yourself hours of stress later.

Most firm owners are using AI like Google.
They ask a question.
Get an answer.
Move on.
But that’s not where transformation happens.
The firms seeing the biggest results are using AI as part of their operations.
Think:
• Creating repeatable workflows
• Standardizing client communication
• Documenting firm knowledge
• Supporting team training
That’s when AI stops being another browser tab...
...and starts becoming another system inside your firm.
I created AI Firm by Design because I saw too many firms experimenting with AI but struggling to turn it into something sustainable. Inside the program, I walk you through exactly how to build AI into your existing processes in a way that actually works.
Because AI should support your systems, not become another thing to manage.
Comment DESIGN below and I’ll send you all the details. 💜

🙋🏽♀️Beautypreneur, I can see your April coming from July.
Not because I’m psychic.
Because I’ve reviewed the books of hundreds of beauty businesses, and the pattern never changes.
The ones who got crushed at tax time were not unlucky. They coasted through summer with no tracking, no tax estimate, and no plan.
The ones who were fine did one thing differently; they checked their numbers mid-year and adjusted while there was still time.
That’s the whole secret. It changes the game!
This week I’m walking you through the exact mid-year check I use.
Saturday, I’m handing you the tool that runs it.
🙋🏽♀️Send this to your suite neighbor.
